Renault F1 team challenge

Renault are setting up a challenge at my local garage next Wednesday. They're going to have six state-of-the-art simulators there, and you can enter a competition to win prizes. The fastest 12 go through to the semi-finals, then the best 6 go to the grand final, with the top three going on a podium and each winning prizes :)

I can't wait for this, it'll be my first time on a simluator and it will be interesting to see what it's like compared to GP4.

The only problem is, on the invitation, it says that you and a friend must work as a team. I only know one other person that may be good at the simulator, but he lives in Germany :( I don't know whether both of us have to drive in a race, or whether one could do all of the work - I was thinking maybe I could do it with dad, and if I got through to the semi-finals or finals I would race.

Either way I can't wait :)

oh wow!

funny thing is that people who enter these competitions are usually ps2 type players and arent as fast as the pc racers with wheels and stuff, so if you are quick in the pc sim world, chances are you'll blow the rest of the field away. also, isnt the isle of wight full of old crinkly people?

Both Peat and myself live across the water from you, though I am terrible and I think Peat is busy.

Would have been hillarious if a GPG teamup won it!

lol, I shouldn't have said where it was! GPGers will thrash me!

I'm not great at GP4, I'm quickish on a single lap, but terrible over a long distance ( i.e. 2 laps ;) ). Sometimes I play a ps2 F1 game though because it's so much more convenient. Better get practicing...

*edit - yes, the iow is full of old crinkly people... I bet one of them might be a demon on the sim though!

Chances are what Renault's team that go around doing this will be using a PS2/3 game...

Seat had a thing at Autosport and it was one of the race driver games. I got into the top 10 I think but the way you had to drive was beyond a joke. The game rewarded you for going basically flat out into a tight harpin...

Alternatively, BMW's F1 sim that they use at races runs rFactor.

That was lucky - the person that I wanted to do it with is staying over here and he'll enter it with me :) Can't wait for tomorrow!

Mixed emotions... half of me is really happy but half is pretty frustrated.

My friend (Julian) is about the same skill as me, and we were definately the best there. The team thing was ditched, it was just heats and the winners from each heat that had the best times went to the final. The track was A1-Ring. On my first race, I was chose 5th of 6 on the grid to avoid start accidents, and I did, and came 3rd by the first corner. But, on the second corner, Julian hit the back of me because I breaked early (I was taking it easy at first to get to know it). I lost about 10 seconds. In the end, I made up places and avoided accidents. I was 2nd at one point, doing perfect laps. On the penultimate lap, the commentator started saying how 'brilliant and smooth' I was. I couldn't help grinning to myself but it put me off ;)

What made it worse was that the person who beat me (he avoided any accidents) was a mortal enemy of our family :-(

Afterwards, I managed to enter a second race to get to the final, but again somebody punted me off - twice! - and put me into a barrel roll. No damage so I was lucky. I was in 3rd and right behind Julian for the remainder of the race and came SO close to overtaking him, but made one or two mistakes out of sheer frustration. On the last corner of the last lap, the leader spun, and Julian punched the air as he won. I swept past to come 2nd.

After that I was very, VERY annoyed that I didn't get to the final. If there weren't so many people there I would have punched him ;)

Dad got me five raffle tickets though, and I won 3 of the 7 prizes! I chose a renault shirt, goodie bag and cap. That took away *most* of the anger.

All in all a great day, and I ended up with more prizes than the winner of the final ;)

So much for the state-of-the-art simluator. We raced on F1 2002 for the PC, with race seats and steering wheels.

Well done anyway, flat. You had the moral victory, and a fistful of F1 prizes, so all was not lost. :)
