If you're owner of a FX5900 (non ultra) graphic card, you might be interested in this story.
There have been few reports on the net lately, stating that is possible to mod it to FX5950 Ultra, simply by flashing it's bios, with the bios of 5950 ultra, possibly by the same manufactured.

Well, I tried it yesterday, and it's absolutely true, and now I'm happy owner of this high end graphic card.

Drivers are reporting now FX5950 ultra, which is the same card as 5900, only clocks are now much higher, from 410/7? to 475/900, resulting in increase from 5000 to 6100 3dmarks. I might OC it a little bit more, but I didn't have time to play with that yet.
It works fine and there's no smoke coming out of it.

My model was Gainward 5900, 256mb RAM (not a golden sample), so if you're buying new card, consider this one, I'll be happy to send you the bios which worked with me.

My friend did the same thing with Radeon 9800, and he has 9800 pro, but I don't know any details.

What are you talking about, 5900 is very silent and certanly way better than ti4800.
I had ti4200 before, it was a great card back then, but now is outdated.

5900 is much more silent than 5800, but it's still not very silent. ;)

Your talking about the 5800 Palomino. That was fixed ages ago.

Pretty interesting topic though. I guess if you want the full performance you have to get a 5900 with 256 Mb of RAM, otherwise you wont have a full 5950 card, and will most probably hamper performance.

Ah, but 256mb of ram = cheaper ram, so usually there's no difference until you hit 1600x1200, with aa and af on, even then its only about 5 fps gained. That's a great find tho bojan :D and nvidia have finally sorted their dx9 performance out, its now better than the ati 9800 xt in some tests - tho that's more to do with drivers than hardware I suspect, unlke the ati cards.

The nVIDIA cards outperform the ATI ones in low res brute force tests. Once you start cranking the res up the ATI starts taking the lead, although there isnt much in it, except nVIDIA have true 32 bit colour (what ever the teccy thing is about that)

ATi Rocks. no problem about that. if you want brute force just buy a good heatsink for it and you can overclock it more (Zalman, for example)...
