Have upgraded my card to a GF4 TI4200 128mb ram, I have the latest Nvidia driver and that works okay, Can anyone tell me the best resolution and settings for the graphics performance without compromising the look.

Thanks.......

First of all congratulations on your new card. It's a good choice, I have such a card myself.

To your question: it really depends on your CPU and RAM. I have an AMD 2200+ and 512 mb RAM. I can run GP4 at 1200x1024 with all details on max and it is very fast and sweet. 1024x768 is even faster (though GP4 internal calibration tells me I get more fps with the higher resolution) and still looks good enough.
With a similar system you should get the same performance, though you never know with Gp4. It can be very choosy.

Have the same card too and an AMD 2000+.
I run GP4 smooth at 1600*1200 @25fps with every details at max (with bump mapping and dynamic env. mapping but no dynamic video walls and no heat haze).

I did not dare setting the resolution that high because I was ot sure if my monitor can copw with that. Some lesser demon around here once blow up his 17" because he set a wrong (=too high) resolution in a game.

Yeah, never push your monitor past its max res and refresh rate. Windows should know what it can cope with, so use that as a guide.

I have that card and P4 1,8. Gp4 runs fine on 1240x1024(can't have higher resolution, because monitor) with all on max and I have 30 fps

My machine is a Thunderbird 1.4ghz with 640 mb of sdram, I am getting about 18fps at 800 x 600 which seems sluggish to me......?

That is quite sluggish for your system. Check to make sure that anti-aliasing is OFF.

With GP4 is perfetly normal to find that a system of that spec cant play the game well. I have 1.67Ghz, 256Mb Ram and run on 1024x768 at 18fps

anti-aliasing

What is that?

Antialiasing

Here's two versions of the same logo. Notice how the one on the right looks smoother than the one on the left? That's because of antialiasing.

How does it work? Well, if we zoom in a little bit, it should be apparent. On the left, the aliasing* (aka "staircasing" or "jaggies";) is much more noticable. Antialiasing smooths out the discretization* of an image by padding pixels with intermediate colors. In this example, we have black lines on a white background, so to antialias, we pad with surrounding pixels of shades of gray.

Why gray? Well, because gray is between white and black. If we used red lines on a white background, we'd want to antialias with shades of pink.

So how does one antialias? It doesn't take much effort at all. If you use Photoshop to make your art, then chances are you've been antialiasing all along. If you've ever rasterized* some of your illustration work into an image (like that company logo you did in Illustrator), then you've probably noticed how much better your work looks when you check the "Antialias" box.

************

You can change the antialising settings (sometimes called FSAA = full screen anti aliasing) in the direct 3D option in the control panel under display properties)

raztahz here back from the xmas holidays...

i have the same card... creative 3d gf4 ti 4200 128mb 1.7ghz...i run on a 1024x768 res with everything on medium and some high... bump mapping speeds it up a bit...30 fps "overall environment average"....

btw frame rate should be judged differently as it has different PO levels
around and in between circuit and camera views... for example on the nose view i get 65 PO on 30fps while on t cam i get around 70 to 80+ PO and 90-100 PO on camera views especially within traffic in the first corner...

fps should be judge by an average on certain points where variables in PO change to get the suitable frame rate

average should be calculated by:

(outside camera+ nose camera+ desired racing view)
________________________________________ = O.E.A.

3

(overall environmental average)

outside camera should be within traffic or start line
average doesn't have to be calculated this way but thats how i do it..

also within practice PO is much lower so be specific with fps rate

...this will calculate a much accurate fps/ PO rate

18 fps...you got to be joking!

I run GP4 using 4x FSAA (D3d only) setting enabled, and a resolution of proably 800 x 600 (maybe 1024 x 768), but I have also modified the F1Graphics.cfg file, to turn off a lot of "uneccessaries" in the mirrors, and have kept geometreis and textures to medium.

I have a P111 IGhz (x2 machines with LAN for multiplayer GP4), ABIT VH6T motherboards, and GEforce 4 Ti4200 64Mb, (the faster one).

With the FSAA turned on the images look better to me than running 1280 x 1024, seemingly allowing you to "see" more accurately into the distance the edge of the track.

With this card, and the performance hit with D3D games using this setting is not massive unless the base resolution goes above 1024 x 768. Try it and form your own opinions.

A note to all: if your using a GF 4 Ti you should be able to run any game at 4x FSAA without a performance decrease.

ot if the rest of ur specs are

WinXP Home
64Mb Ram
900Mhz CPU?

Well if ya gonna be so picky......!! Neil's right tho, if you have one of those cards, then most people have a system of similarly high specs. We all know you shouldn't have a top end gfx card if you have a slower system, its a waste of money. Even with a good system XP2000+ for example, a gf4 mx440 will do the trick for all games.

Ah, someone who agrees with me :)

Its true. The GF4 Ti cards can processor FSAA with minimum performance loss. Naturally, it requires a beefy PC, but ive seen it with my own eyes. A mate of mine lost only 3 fps in UT 2003 with 4x FSAA
