f1 crashing

my game used to always crash back to desktop
i installed the new 9.6 patch
now it crashes it goes to a black screen
then i got to turn my machine off at the tower to get it to restart
any ideas on how to get this bitch to go right

sound blaster 5.1
768 ddr ram
windows xp service pk 1

try shoving it in windowed mode, then if it crashes you get an error message and can click ok to get back to the desktop
