Any one had any problmes installing and running GP4. Can't get it to run even just the basic game both with and without 9.6 patch. I get a change in resolution and half a black screen and nothing happens. My windows 7 doesn't have the xp mode is that the problem.

No, because I have Windows 7 and it runs perfectly without compability mode.
Did you make a fresh install in this order?:

- install the game
- Install official patch 9.6
- install the GP4.exe decrypted
- Run the game once and save.
- install Gpx patch.

Then, you must start the game from Gpxpatch.

Yeah did all that except it wouldn't run at all even in the most basic setup. The crash looks similar to something i experienced once before when i had to reinstall XP a few years back so must be missing something somewhere.

hmmm... Strange, what is your windows 7 OS version? RC,OEM, 7 basic, professionnal, Ultimate?

Same thing when you launch GP4.exe and GpxPatch.exe in compability mode with Windows XP SP2 or Win98?

Why are people stuck in their ways so much, XP is no longer the best platform! Especially if you have over 3 gigs of ram.

GP4 works fine on Windows 7 RTM for me.

in all fairness WIndows 98 was the best for the GPx series - i still run a windows 98 box for GP3 stuff (won't quite stretch to GP4 unfortunately). As far as modern versions go, i found Vista far superior to XP for pretty much everything (i loathe XP with a passion and wish it would burn in hell)

Back OT, I've had this bug before (on vista, and 2000) and i can't remember how i fixed it - think i just reinstalled, and reinstalled graphics drivers while i was at it. Have you tried with the decrypted exe?.

GP4 does work fine on 7, it's about the same as vista performance/reliability wise (GP4 that is, 7 is a different story - loads worse for me!)

have you tried running as administrator, or setting compatibility mode for the exe (right click on it and go to compatibility - choose win98 or xp)

Home professional doesn't have an XP mode so that is probably going to stop me playing GP4 for now on.

You don't need XP mode to run GP4 atall. And it still has XP Compatibility mode.

and you don't even need that apparently. I've just installed GP4 on my Win7 HP box and it runs completely fine (despite being slow because i'm encoding a video at the moment)

Have you tried the latest graphics drivers? THe only real difference between my machine and yours is that mine runs an ATi card, and yours has an NVidia.

1. Grand Prix 4 runs fine on Windows 7. You don't set for the game any compilation mode.

2. Windows XP mode for Professional / Ultimate is only for old applications. You can't run games in this mode, cause the xp mode give your graphic card a default driver.

I've had this problem too when I was using my old PC 3 GHz, 1,5 Gbyte RAM with a Plasma 42'' TV. I can't start GP4, had a black screen before GP4 main menue. I use XP Home Edition.

Then I build up a new PC with Core 2 Dou 8000 series (3.0 GHz) and a new NVidia GeForce 9600 GT HD-Card. And now GP4 runs fine on TV screen with XP.

yeah, In Windows Vista/7 64Bit, you should use "Compatible mode" to run GP4. On rare chances you can run in normal mode.
