There is apparently a problem with DirectX 8.1 in relation to AMD processors. Check out [support.microsoft.com]. Unfortunately it doesn't look like Microsoft plan to provide a free fix in the immediate future, though I gather that a service pack for XP is imminent.

Maybe a try could be to install DirectX 8.1b.

Maybe it doesn't work but have to be tried....
