Well, firstly turn your sound acceleration down in windows, under sound and audio settings in control panel. This is the main way to gain extra fps. Setting acceleration gave me an extra 20 fps, but sound was poor. Medium gave good sound quality and gave me some 15 fps extra.
My system is 2ghz Pentium 4 processor, Geforce 4 mx 420 (It really is a good card guys ;-) ) and 256mbDDR ram. When my GP4 graphics were configured with most things on low settings, I got 42 fps, 800x600 resolution. Now everything bar shadows and reflections is on its highest setting and I get 35 fps.

I don't want to be patronizing again, but shouldn't it be "A question to CAI" instead of "A message to CAI?" - technically that is. Oh, don't mind my ramblings, I was just thinking loud again ...

Cai, why are you running 800*600 ?

Cos whenever I try to do 1024x (whatever it is) I get a big drop in fps.

As long your above 25 fps your OK. 25 fps is considered smooth, anything above is wondeful :)

well I cant stand anything below about 30, so thats why I keep it on 800x600. Cos on that resolution I can have full details on everything I don't mind at all, and I get 35fps. What I don't like is the graphics test is kinda false, cos it can't test all features. I tested 1024x (whatever) on everything on full details and i got 35fps, but in game it was really slow cos the features were only then being tested to the full.

Bump mapping is costly for fill
Also advanced car shader
And to lesser extent I believe the highest level reflections

So to run higher res turn those things off/down

Could also try 16bit mode if this is still slow.

im only getting 18fps on 800x 600, not ebverything maxed out either, im happy with 18 cos i originally had 8, i dont see much difference between 22 and 18, so i cant imagine 35, almost too fast? is that possible

should i be getting better frames than 18 with this system
P3, 550Mhz, 384mg ram, Nvidia TNT ultra 2 32 mg graphics card?
im no expert with systems but should i be getting better frames with this system or not? how can i imprve them to above 20 without going to 640x480?

cheers

No, that is an amazing result for that system. Turn off 3d sound hardware acceleration in windows, that'll give you maybe 5 more fps
