At the moment I'm defragging my drives before running 3DMark03, PCMark04 and Aquamark3 to see what scores I get. I'm using my laptop to access the forum until I've completed all the tests.

The CPU score is a laugh! Are you sure it says 3.2Ghz in the BIOS and not 320Mhz or something?

In the BIOS, it says 3.2Ghz, but when I am running those tests, the CPU heat is around 73oC all along....

Maybe this is it...

You could buy a Zalman heatsink then. I have one for my 3000XP and it is briliant.

Sounds like the CPU is using something called Thermal Throttling - in effect, if the cpu gets too hot, the cpu will slow down to cool itself, to avoid damage. AMD cpus (well, XPs) dont have it, instead they just restart the pc to cool down.

So get a desk fan (one of those ones you have around the house for when its hot) take the case side off, and switch the fan on, blowing ONTO the heatsink. Try running 3d mark then, if its better, you know the cooling is the iissue, which it sounds like, as that is really quite hot imo.

Sounds like the cpu may have not got enough (or any) thermal compound on the coore, so it gets much hotter, as obviously the heatsink is on.

Right. Just finished my tests. PCMark04 score of 3849. No breakdown for HDD, CPU or memory because it didn't say! 3DMark03 score of 4071. Aquamark 3 score of 36741. Gfx score for Aquamark 3 was 5271 and CPU was 6707.

don't have no desk fan :(, so I can't try that.

About the thermal paste, i didn't do it myself (to scared to mess up), so i bought the computer in a shop....

I've no idea what all these scores mean but i've just run PCmark 2002 on my comp and got the following results.

CPU score 7103
Memory score 7540
HDD score 1088

Specs are AMD64 3400, 160G HD, X800Pro, 512MB 3200LL RAM.

Are the above scores acceptable because I haven't got a clue.....

Yeah, they look grand mate.

WaZz, I really think that thermal throttling is your problem, just a quick check - there is a 80mm fan attached to your cpu heatsink, and it is blowing air off the cpu (ie sticker facing away from heatsink)?

Just run 3Dmark 2001 and that gave me a score of 6250.....

Are they the sort of socres you'd expect from the spec shown or am I not getting the best from it?

WaZz, check that your heatsink is attached properly to your processor. My Intel one half-unclips if my PC takes a knock, so it's possible that your heatsink isn't on properly. I had the same thing with my CPU, managed to get it up to about 80, then it died.

I actually meant to see if the heatsink is pressed down securly onto the processor. Mine comes off at one side.
