Questions from a newbie...

Today I am trying my hand at this game that I basically do not know.
After reading something around, I patched the game (9.6), put the NOCD exe, downloaded and installed ZAZTools and GpxPatch.
While I was there, I also installed the 2001 mod.
After 2 hours of play I find some difficulties:

1) The game often crashes, it never happened while driving but typically moving in the menus.
For the record I'm running the game in windows xp compatibility mode on windows 7.

2) Saving the game perplexes me.
I was in qualifying and at one point I thought about going out to save and resume later.
Unfortunately, when I opened the save I discovered that the qualification was no more available, I could only enter the warmup session or the race.
Does this really work so or is there something wrong?

3) I can't understand how replays work!
I have set the game to be able to record replays longer than an hour, but within a session, with space bar and "R" key I can always see a few seconds of replay.
Also I can't figure out what I have to do to review the replay of a session.
What are the steps to take step by step?
For now I will stop here, but surely more 'later I will have other questions to ask.

Because your using CSM you have to save your your race or qualify or what ever outside the Gpsaves menu.
Put always 1hours 30 minutes of replay to avoid compatabilities issues.

So, step by step, what I have to do?
Forgive me, I still don't know enough about this game and the tools I have installed. I'm a blank sheet.
And what about the crashes?

The replays are already set for an hour and a half.
