Hi all. I want to be able to play GP4 without it crashing to desktop. I have a log file from the gpxpatch debug mode, high verbosity. Here it is:

No. I had to do it through high verbosity. It was crashing even in normal mode (no debug) so I put it in debug to get a log file to post here.

Vanilla. I haven't had the chance to start modding as I want GP4 to stop CTD before I start modding. And what is the display device? Would that be screen resolution?

CFG file? I'll check it out later. I think the highest resolution my pc can handle is the one below the 1600 resolution.

Issue would occur on two PC's, that I was testing on. machine specs are:-

#PC1:-
Memory:- 16gig ram 1333mhz
AMD CPU:- FX-6300 6 cores cpu
Mainboard:- GA-78LMT-USB3 rev 5

HPC (high performance computing) feature does not exist in the Mainboard bios.

#PC2:-
Memory:- 16gig ram
AMD CPU:- FX-8350 8 cores cpu
Mainboard:- Asus M5A97EVO R2.0

HPC (high performance computing) feature exists on the Mainboard bios, and I have enabled it.

I tried so many things to rectify the issue, some of these things were:-

-Playing with video card settings
-turning off sound
-setting the number of CPU cores to 2 using msconfig.exe (this had varying results)
-changing graphic card settings ingame
-tried different windows compatibility modes on gp4.exe and gpxpatch.exe (left it at winxpsp2)
etc etc..


Because the issue is intermittent it was hard to pinpoint the problem, these type of errors
are the worst ones to troubleshoot, cause the issue may not happen for the first race
but comes back when you do 2nd or 3rd race.

I vaguely remember years ago in the 1990's (Yes I know I'm an old fella) I had issues with certain software running
where it would crash intermittently, and through this experience I found by upping the voltage on cpu/memory/chipset
in bios of the mainboard would rectify the issue.

Analogy to this is this, under load the conditions change, will the cart be able to carry the load or will the wheels just give out under it

now since GP4 came out in 2002 and was CPU intensive game would the auto voltage settings for CPU/Memory and bridge chipset
in the bios be enough to provide power under load. So I made a small step adjustment.

In the bios for PC1, I manually set the following (note here just go up one increment at a time and test, do not set it to the maximum voltage right away, I only had to goto 1 increment and this works):-

-CPU voltage control, from 1.4125v to 1.4325v
-CPU NB VID control, from 1.2025v to 1.2225v
-DDR3 voltage 1.500v to 1.510v
-chipset .1v increment
-I set the temp warning alarm when processor hits 70 degrees

I have run GP4 so far 4 times in a row and I have not experienced a crash (CTD), or warning alarm of cpu getting hot.
I will continue testing but looks real promising so far.

On PC2 I have enabled HPC mode, I found this snippet about this feature:-

For AM3+ boards that support the FX line of AMD CPU's, HPC mode is an option that tones down (or removes entirely) CPU throttling based on (IIRC) a current limit instead of a
thermal limit.
Aside from removing throttling, it will also make the single-core Turbo the all-cores Turbo freq, effectively making it the "normal" full-speed even when all cores are loaded.

On PC2 I have not experienced crash with HPC being enabled, but I'm still testing. If it were to crash I would do the same thing I did for PC1.
