Hi guys,

I got a prob with my game, it always CTDs in the game especially when pressing Esc when driving and just trying to load the game.

HELP ME PLZ

@Ralf: Is this the first time GP4 ctd or does it happen since the beginning ?
What's your graphical card ?
Did you try to update your graphical card driver ?

Well I just want to say that I have the same problem...I tried many things (updating drivers....gpx patch...nothing helps)

Well, if you don't give us more information than Ralf, there are few chances we could help you.
Anyhow, most of the time, such matters are due to "bad health" computer/operating system or device being miss-installed.

Well, this is the 1st time it's ever happened. GP4 worked on this PC before it broke. I got a new Motherboard and tried to install it a few weeks ago. i just kept getting CTDs. At first i thought it was the 04 patch i downloaded that caused the prob. but i uninstalled and then reinstalled and ran the game without the patch. i still got CTDs

Next time you uninstall the game, search the registry for any Gp4 realted entries that might not have been removed. Be careful though and back things up before deleting registry keys.

I just had my very first crash to desktop in two years of GP4. It happened after I installed updated performances and physics for the first time. In my case I can be almost certain what caused the problem, but does this relate to your circumstances?
Over the past two years I have installed all the best updates and utilities and the game looks awe inspiring on my P4 2.8ghz 512DDR Asus Geforce 4 4600ti and I have never suffered this problem before. Sure, I have had lock-ups when switching cams as is commonly reported in this forum, and crashing out when loading which is caused by corupted car/anim.wads, but never a return to desktop during race.
This may mean something to you... or it may have no bearing on you problem at all, but one thing is for sure, I'll be steering clear of performance and physics updates in the future.

Nope, i reinstalled GP4 without the updates.
Just CLEAN GP4 install and play.
I still get CTDs

Nice but as long you won't give us your computer spec as I asked upper, we won't be able to help you. If you only changed your motherboard, I can just advice you to browse your mobo manufacturer's site,check for every update/driver and apply them.

I have a similar problem GP4 with NOCD and GPxPatch 3.8.. after I have a spinn or a crash or in the middle of a race back to desktop
I have changed the Graphic card from Gforce 64 MB to ATI 9200 SE 128 MB
.. same problem, I formated the Hard drive, Install xp pro new, installed first the GP4... crashed ...than Orignal patch... crashed.... NO CD... crashed.... GPxPatch... the same.

P4 2.4 Ghz, 512 DDR, ATI 9200 SE 128 MB 8x AGP, 160GB Hard drive, all new updates of Ati and win XP SP1...

.. where is the Problem?

I came back to Grand Prix 4 recently to have another crack at the stability issue:- crashing to desktop
After much testing i think I nailed it

It isn't because of multicore cpu's it is to do with the Graphics.

-Set the windows desktop to 16bit , right click on desktop and choose screen resolution, then click on advanced setting, then monitor tab
under colors drop down choose high color (16bit)

-Go back into the game, options and then graphics, click Advanced, select manual, set all to the highest level
click on test, (on fast PC you should get close to 60fps)
On Frame rate slider, set it to 30fps from 60fps (this will make the processor work less and the game will still run super fast)
exit the game and save it on the way out.
run the gp4.exe or gpxpatch.exe (note here make both exes compatibility level windows xp sp2 and tick the following check boxes:-

disable visual themes
disable desktop composition
disable display scaling on high DPI settings
run this program as an administrator


I have tested on Lan with 2 pcs connected did it 4 times already on full race length and no crashes, works like it should.

I am still testing, so far looks very promising. Do the above and let me know if it helps

Ah forgot to mention I'm using Windows 7 SP1 64bit version

Just adding more to the post, if by chance after mucking about the config settings your not getting 60fps on fast PC, which happened to me

remove these files:-

f1graphics.bak
f1graphics.cfg
f1gstate.sav
f1gstate.bak

go back into the option graphics and set it again, you should notice it working correctly again with performance (game won't run sluggish)

I have gone through this trouble with this Game, because till this day it offers features not found in newer f1 games released these days
well worth the effort.
