GP4 doesn't start

Hey guys,

since a few days I have some problems with GP4. I'm using CSM, and if I select a mod and click on start, CSM starts swapping the files and loads the tracks, but then the game doesn't start. CSM disappears and I'm back at the desktop, no black screen. When I then open taskmanager, it shows me that CSM, gpxpatch.exe and gp4.exe are all still running. I then close gp4.exe via taskmanager, and then get an gpxpatch error log and out of nowhere CSM is back and restores the files. If I click again on start after the files are restored, gp4 starts normal. It wouldn't be such a big problem if everything runs normal then, but since I have this problem the PO is between 200% and 300% what makes it unplayable.
I haven't changed anything on the PC or the ingame settings, the problem occured from one day to the next. I just remember that I had a similar problem with gp3 a while ago, it too only started on the second try, but other than now the PO was normal.

Verbosity is set to high, CPU to 0. I've already tried changing this settings but it didn't help.
Running in XP compability mode also didn't help.
I've also deleted f1graphics and f1gstate files and recalibrated the graphics, but that too didn't solve my problem.
I've tried running the game with different texture resolutions in the mod's configurables, but even with low res the PO was about 200%.

It would be great if anyone knows a solution for this problem.

This are my PC specs:
Win7 Home Premium 64bit service pack 1
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ 2.60GHz
2GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS

And this is the log file I've mentioned above:

Does gp4 run on its own, via gpx?

At the first start it crashes, if I try it again after that it starts, but it's still unplayable, PO now jumps all the time between 90% and 190%.
I've also tried starting it without gpx, here too it crashs at the first try but starts if I try it again. PO was normal.

I've noticed that everytime I start the game rundll32.exe starts too, and that it keeps running after closing gp4 and causes a cpu-load of 50%. If I end it via taskmanager gp4 again only starts on the second try.

You must set gp4.exe to run in XP SP3 and test. Right click run as admin. No csm, no gpx, and a clean wad. You can also install and run it on an XP rig, then copy the dir to your Win 7 rig. If you have the space, create a partition and install XP with a boot manager.

I've tried what you said about compability settings, still the problems at starting. It runs fine without gpxpatch, but with gpx the PO now is above 1500%, and with CSM even at 2500%! I'll now install it on my XP partition and then copy it, and if that doesn't work I'll use the backup I've luckily made after installing it the first time, back then when it was running fine.
Anyway thanks for your help, Mal.

I'd really like to know what has happened...

Sorry to drag a thread up but I'm having the exact same problem. When I run Gp4 either by itself or through csm/gpxpatch nothing happens or appears despite the gp4.exe process appearing in task manager. Like Tobi had, rundll32.exe starts up and builds up to huge amounts. Gp4 and rundll32 have to be shut through task manager.

I've tried what mal suggested above but that hasn't worked, and I don't have an xp copy around with which to create a partition... A google on rundll32.exe suggests that perhaps one of the .dll files used by GP4 is activating it and as such causes the memory leak.

Any help would be massively welcome as at the moment GP4 is completely out of action and no Internet means I'm relying on it for entertainment! :)

Back then I had to re-install GP4, that was the only thing that worked for me. If you do so, too, you should backup your Tracks, GPSAVES and gpxpdata folders and your f1graphics then to save you some time with re-installing. I did that and used them with the new installation, and apparently they didn't cause the PO/rundll32.exe problem.

Thanks Tobi, I've tried uninstalling and copying over a backup version which hasn't worked, but am not able to do a clean install yet. I'll let you know what happens once I'm able to.

So I've done a full reinstall and that doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. Still getting the rundll32 and no gp4. In terms of uninstalling I'm not convinced I'm completely removing gp4 from my system, are there any files the game uses outside of the main directory? At this rate it will have to be a complete windows reinstall...

Look for something like revo uninstaller to uninstall it completely, as a program like that removes any registry files still loaded in the system. Also, look through the folder used for GP4 and delete anything in there.

Wish I could provide more to help :p

Use CCleaner to remove redundant registry entries.

Thanks guys, it turns out then when I uninstalled loads of registry stuff was being left behind which effectively kept the problem on the system. Everything cleaned using both the tools and all is working as it should be now!
