You take the positions from start and the actual position and calculate the difference

i.e. start: 1 actual: 3 -> 03-01 = +2 (lost 2 positions)
start 15 actual: 11 -> 11-15 = -4 (wins 4 positions)

maybe possible?

Yep, it's just a differential standing position, compared to the starting grid. Hence it appears after a very few laps to show who did a great start and who didn't.

So I should just show it at the same time for a certain period and then hide it for the rest of the race?

I think it does occasionally show up later in the race, but yeah, if you base it on appearing automatically for 20 seconds on 3rd lap or something and then disappearing it would work, with possibly an option to press a button and bring it back later.

It also appears on the second last lap.

So the second lap and second last lap then If anyone sees it at any point during the race let us know..!
