Athlon XP 2.0 ghz and my GP4 is still sluggish

...on max details. Since it relies mostly on CPU power, I thought it would run great on my new PC..yet, after maxing all gfx settings it has like 10 fps?!

What a dissapointment...Can anyone tell me is there a way of fixing this?

Why is it still acting like pig on 2 ghz machine? It ran fine on my old P3 650 but I saw no real diff on my new comp.

???

Thx,

Breadfan

Try turn-off all sound settings in GP4 to find any differences.

In reality, doesn't matter who's right but most important is who's left.

well ive got a similar processor, i still need to take the accelorator off the sound thing in the control panel, using static environments and no mirrors i get about 50 recommended fps, but about 43 without slowdowns. Cant see why yours is 10 tho!

You forgot to mention your graphic card?

Despite what thet say about GP4 being CPU dependent, the graphics card makes abig difference. I also found that changing my defective sb512 pci sound card for an Audigy made a big difference.

Of course graphic card makes a difference...when I passed from GF2 mx to GF4 ti4200 it was a huge improvement, even when all other components stayed the same.

GeForce2 mx, but before u start with the "it's the vid issue" talk, let me remind u that the game ran pretty good on my old CPU WITH mirrors and most gfx ON.

I'm sure I can make it a lot faster..will check that sound options thingie though..

Have u reinstalled windows?

Its not good just putting in a cpu windows will still have the registry for the old one.

Have u checked your FSB in the bios settings, it might still be set to 100 and not 133?

I have AMD Athlon 2500+ (barton), 512 mb ram 333 mhz and radeon 9100, and i can`t play the game with full details (environmental maping is static, and not dynamic). I have around 35 fps. Is this normal?

I had a 500 mhz Gf4mx400 and i could only get 15 with everything turned off. basicly even with original cars i couldnt race coz of the slow down. all i could do was Hotlap

If you have win xp, try in sound settings (ctrl panel, sounds and audio devices, speaker settings, advanced, performance) lower the sample rate convertion quality to good. At my comp it helped a lot (up to 50%). And then in gp4 sound options set all to off. Try!

Good luck

Also, the usual stuff like checking the graphic settings in case you've got AA or anisotropic filtering enabled.

Which Detonator are you using. 44.03 is pretty good

Dolinseks: I think you are doing ok with 35 fps and static em with that card. I have switched to static too, since it is less of a hit - epecially in the rain. If you got a 9700 or better you could switch on 4xaa andf 16 x af with no noticable hit on gfps and the game looks like a dream with no saw edges etc....very very smooth. I run with everything else on at 34 fps and it is superb.

Check if you have the right drivers for your motherboard chipset. I had to do a reformat and reinstall my OS (win98) a while a go. After that GP4 got erratic, Po went up and down during a lap between 70 and 130 with slowdowns of course. No other program or game was affected. At last I remembered to reinstall the INF-files from the mobos support disc. Back to normal and even better perf than before. Po steady 50-60 with 30 fps.

Rgds,

Thanx LarryM. At the moment I am using 4 af and I have around 5% bigger PO, but textures are realy good. I have tried 16 af, but at start my pc is like a minardi.

In a related topic,

I've been considering upgrading my cpu to a 2.0ghz Athlon but on a low cost board that is still just 266Mhz FSB. That way I can still use my PC-133 ram ( 512Mb ) . Since the CPU will be twice as fast, but the FSB and RAM will be the same, what could I expect in improved performance ?

Current Setup

Athlon 1.0Ghz
Asus M/B with 266 fsb
512Mb PC-133 RAM
geForce 3 Ti 200 ( 64Mb RAM , AGP 4X )
Sound Blaster Audio PCI
