Multiplayer question?

Hi all, I have searched for an answer here but can't find what I'm looking for and maybe someone can help.
I'm would like to know if in multiplayer you can have just a free practice session and not a race, so I could just do laps and go in and out of the pits as normal practice. At the moment I have netrace as the only race type option in multiplayer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
