has someone already a modified exe (version 9.6 ,1.02 ) modified so as to use only the lod0 ? so yu can have a smaller cars.wad , if it is possible i would like to try it ,

it might show some advantage if you already use all lod_0.
but if you do that then your machine probably doesn't have any problems.
using big textures hit the po more than large lods.

search in the hex editor for:
CAR_%s_CAR%d_LOD_%d
and replace with:
CAR_%s_CAR%d_LOD_0
(make sure theres a space after the LOD_0

offset 002444a1

thats what i mean. not a space space. but 00 in the hex side. (i'm a beginner :) )


anyway, try it first. it takes 2 seconds and is easier than me sending 6mb

Yes for common situation.
Larger textures mean larger memory block to access. If you have latest graphics card technology with plenty and very fast video memory, bigger textures has only small significant downgrade performances.

i don't know how work and which hex editor you use , i have tried and i found the value , put 0 after the lod , ma didn't find how to insert space or 00 as you have said to me , i found a D after the % substituted with the 0,

i use it now in testing(1988), because i can't be bothered copying 100 more lods, and it is worse for me. even though i used mostly lod_0s before (2003).
so you might gain some fps if you already use lod_0 copied down, but if you do that then chances are you don't need any fps extra.

about larger textures v hi lods i done some quick calcs (again i'm only a beginner :) ).

110 lods @ 300kb=33mb
33 1024 tex @ 1.3m = 44mb
wad=77mb

assuming 22 cars are on screen it uses 44mb of textures, but 33/5 of lods ~8mb.
=52mb total

512 tex would be 11mb
so its 19mb in total.

thats filesizes only, but must have some relation to memory use.

no i had cars with scaled lod where possible , now it is better no hit on fps 22mb wad and always good shape on sight
