HOW TO Install cars in GP4!

Hi,

As so many newbies on the forum ask how to install cars in Grand Prix 4 here's a little guide I've been working on. It's been under development for a while, mainly because I don't have the time to update it too often, hopefully it will get finished one day

So before you ask:

Why do I have two mclarens?

Why do I have the original jaguar?

Why do I have a different carshape when a car recedes away from me?

Why do I have white cars?

Is btone god?

Why is the sky blue?

Ok, maybe it won't answer the last two questions but it's definately worth a read for newbies updating GP4, it might help you understand gp4's working and all the tech talk about lods and textures.
It may also save you from having to buy a new keyboard after you broke it in frustration at all those extra mclarens and white renaults

If I could find an alternate host that would be great as it's my friends webspace and I don't want to cost her money in bandwidth! Any suggestions for an alternate host welcome.

ive always found gp4 one of the easiest games to mod (install cars) all it requires is sticking a bunch of files inside of a wad

@ Matt, my thoughts exactly. all it takes is a little time to understand what is going on in the game, what happens with the LODs, how the game loads these wads, how to manipulate the LOD names, and you shouldn't have any problems.

since i learnt (through trial and error, and a bit of reading) i have never had a problem, and installing a new car intot he team slot i want is done within minutes.

everyone was a n00b at one time, but it seems there's has been a huge flood of new people in the recent weeks.

I think GP3 was easier than GP4 to mod because you just had to open GP3Editor, open the bitmap and click Export. As you know, there's a great tool called Easywad available for GP4, but I have never seen a topic "how do i install cars" in the GP3 forum on this site.

You're right, but it's useful anyway

That is a truely excellent How To. Thankyou so much...One comment I may add, when you do this (update cars etc) you need to update the grid list at the start of the race as surely this will display the origional team order?

And another thing chaps, updating this game is NOT a logical and simple thing to do for newcomers. I have been playing GP since 1991-2 (or whenever the original was out)and I am an IT engineer, but have found this a little confusing. That said - when it 'clicks' I'm sure its a peice of cake

@ Barclayboy, you can change the drivers' names in teameditor, and then change the teamarts, so the correct names and faces appear in the correct position in the driver selection menu.

Hi...

There`s something I just can`t make right...

I changed cars.wad with .gp4 files, e.g. car_benetton_car1_lod_0.gp4 , and the rest of car files including textures... Then I swapped carshapes Ferrari carshape to Benetton car shape (im using 2006 perfomances) and now I have Micheal Schumacher sitting in Renault car...
To fix this I should install cars in other way, right?
How....
Before uploading .gp4 file cars.wad I should change file name slightly to... 2004 car order? In Renault car case should I change it to Ferrari?

I have to admit that I`m quite confused...

Anyway I tried... doing something... but now Renault has red interior (actually the cockpit is red when using drivers-eyes camera...

I think I renamed Renault car shapes to Ferrari and then added them to cars.wad

Anyone knows how to fix this? Just a few sentences would be enough :D

@ Pawel, when you add a new car, it only changes the car shape and textures.

you have to change the drivers name, helmet and interior cockpit separately.

you can change the team and driver names in TeamEditor, and you can change the interior cockpits by renaming the cp_ files, so if you see the ferrari cockpit in the renault, and the renault cockpit in the ferrari, find the cp_ferrari.tex file and rename it to renault, then find the cp_renault.tex file and rename it to ferrari.

as for the helmets being wrong, Schumacher was driver 1 for so many years so in the game, the world champion position is taken by him as default. but Alonso is driver 7 or 8, so you need to file the 2 helmet files for MS and change the number to number 5, and find the 2 files for Alonso's helmet and rename them both to driver 1. then recompress the wad and the helmets should be with the correct cars.

I downloaded this one: [www.gp4italia.org]

It has car shape files like that car_arrows_car1_lod_0 so it goes in arrows slot.
Textures are named: hi_dc.tex and hi_redbull.tex ... Just as it says in tutorial I did not change names of texture files (and I didn`t change names of .gp4 files because they were already changed) and now car is white...
Maybe I should rename textures to e.g. arrows_a22_1.tex ?

Usually when I change car shape and drive using T-cam steering wheel sticks out of the body work... Do you have the same?

Unfotunately not every car that I downloaded had cp_ files...
Anyway :D my biggest problem are white cars... :P
