I've been happily playing GP4 with a res of 1440x900 since I got my new widescreen monitor a few months ago. It was as simple as altering the resolution in the f1graphics.cfg. No problem, it looked great.

However, I allowed someone else to play GP4 on my PC and I think they altered the resolution from the in-game graphics menu because now the game is stuck in 640x480, even though the .cfg settings are as follows;

1 ; f1graphics.cfg controls all settings (default 0)
1440 ; [RELEASE] Game 3D Horizontal Resolution
900 ; [RELEASE] Game 3D Vertical Resolution

I've tried deleting the .cfg and letting a new one be created and then altering it to the above, but that didn't work. I also unsuccessfully tried deleting the f1gstate file.

The only way I have been able to get the game to run in 1440x900 has been to force it into windowed mode but I don't want to play that way forever.

Am I right in thinking this was probably caused by a resolution change in-game? If so, I'd be grateful if anyone has any tips that might help me to solve the issue and get playing again!

on mine, using a custom res (1361x768 if i remember rightly) The menu always says im running in 640*480, but the game itself always runs in the resolution i wanted. Try taking a screenshot of the game itself, and see what resolution you're getting...

I play with a res of 1440*900 and your edited F1grapcics.cfg is correct ..and as harjinator says, the resolution into the game menu shows 640*480 but it is correct: you play with a res of 1440*900.

Thanks guys, but maybe I didn't make myself clear, I know exactly what to do to get it running with a custom res, I've been doing it for the last seven years and I know full well the game menu tells you it's 640x480 and to ignore it, but now it really is running at 640*480, no doubt about it, I can see it visually and the screenshots confirm it. Like I said, it was fine until my friend altered the res via the IN-GAME graphics menu, which I believe can upset the res settings (read it on here once I think).

For example, this is what my GP4 looked like a week ago;

And today;

Yes, the size of the second shot is 1440x900 but that's because I resized it to emphasise the quality loss I have experienced - that is what it looks like in-game to me now. Effectively, the game is stretching a 640x480 to 1440x900 whereas it used to display 1440x900 just fine, as you can see.

Sorry for posting such huge images, but I felt it was necessary to prove my point.

Try this, once worked for me: delete cfg file, recalibrate, go ingame menu and set an intermediate res ( like 1280*1024 ) and finally change it in cfg file

Thanks Gigi, I tired what you said and this time set the res to 1600x900 as an experiment and it worked, which is great. So, I then tried to set it back to 1440x900 in the cfg file and the probem has re-occurred. It just seems to be refusing to display 1440x900 correctly, it's quite happy to display any other res. Very odd.

have you installed new video drivers recently? it could be not a GP4 problem

Nope, but I suspect you're right, whatever it is might have nothing to do with GP4.

I can play properly with 1600x900, which would do if the probem can't be solved but I think 1440x900 looks better on my monitor.

Check if 1440x900 is available as an option in the windows display settings, if it isnt then GP4 will default back to 640x480 :).

Wich os do you use? Does it give you the possibility of 1440*900 for the desktop res?

Humn very odd!

Check that your f1graphics.cfg is not read only, infact check the whole gp4 folder permissions (make sure no files/subfolders are read only)?

Sorry that the only thing I can think of at the moment :(

1 ; f1graphics.cfg controls all settings (default 0)

Try changing that to 0? I dunno

Well, I'm now playing at 1440x900 but more by accident than by design.

I had two GP4 installations, one my main 2003 install which I have just the way I want and keep stable, the other for mods and messing about. So, I decided to delete the second one to save disk space. When I tried to play my main 2003 one, the 1600x900 res I was using had the 640x480 problem. Upon changing the res back to 1440x900, I now find it works, lol!

Any reason why deleting the scond installation would have such an effect?
