Hardware suggestions for GP4

Hey there! I'm looking for suggestions for the best graphics card(s) and CPU(s) to run GP4 really really well.... I'm looking to upgrade in the near future, and I want a system that can run GP4 top level!

I know that GP4 doesn't have dual-core support, therefore I'm looking for the best single-core setup. I'd like to run hi-res textures, and all the bells and whistles in the Graphics setup. My first thought for the processor was an AMD64 based system (AMD 3200+ was my target), but I don't know how Intel processors fare in GP4. For the graphics card, I'm thinking ATI, but does it need to be a good one in order to run the hi-res textures and the like (i.e X800 series)? Ideally, I'd like to run GP3 without it locking up as well, so that's why I'm thinking an ATI graphics card.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Alot of the screenie guys use Intel's, but there are a couple who use AMD's.

The best single core is probably the FX-57, it's completely awesome, but it's about £500. You're best bet is probably a 4000+, I think it can be overclocked to somewhere around about FX-57 speeds, which is pretty awesome :)

As for gfx, the best you can get (from ATi) is the X1900XT-X I believe. Tbh, you don't really need it unless you're playing a lot of newer games: rF, HL2 etc, it's just full of eye-candyness (HDR, and ridiculously high filter settings).

If you're looking at an X800, a GTO is probably your best bet, about £85 I think, and you'll have all the bells and whistles with a low PO (especially if you pair it with a 4000+). You could go one better, but I can't remember for the life of me how the mid-range cards perform in PCI-E (1300-1600)

Hope this helps a bit

Hey thanks! 4000+ it could be, the X800 GTO was one of my options, probably go for the X800XL. Cheers zeppelin!

The nVidia equiavalent is the 7600GT or the 7800GT. I've got the latter and it really does run everything beautifully. Now that the site's back up I'm on a hunt for all the hi-res track textures etc. so I can see GP4 the way it should be. :)

I run GP4 on a 3200+ overclocked to 2400Mhz (3800+ now) with an ASUS A8N-E Mobo.
My VGA is and MSI 6800GS overclocked to 540/1240Mhz.
Now I recommend you to to buy a something like this but if you have some more money buy a 7800GT and a 3800+ CPU (but 70% of the 3200+ go on 2400Mhz as they have are the same)
I had an Intel 3.0Ghz before and I can say this AMD one is better. :)

who told u that GP4 won't support Dual core PC's.

check my signature. GP4 runs smooth and perfect in 1280X1024 with all high res and updates along with full mirror's in 8XAA and 16AF.

Right, did you manage to get GP4 to fully support dual-core? If not, I may hold out for a little longer till the AM2 boards start getting faster and more widespread. Would love to get my hands on an FX-62, but it ain't gonna happen!

I'm steering away from NVIDIA video cards, as I need something that doesn't make GP3 lock up during a race.

And yes, I do know about the 64-bit and PCI-E support! I get PC Format and keep up to date with that!

if u use DUAL core processor or P4 HT , try to select in gpxpatch under CPU 0 or 1. it will run smooth without any problems.

it's ur decision whether to wait or not for AM2 from AMD. they are very fast and good but right now they will be costly.

Is it worth enabling "Dynamic" in the environment setting? It just seems to make things more shiny...

wait for intel's core 2 duo (conroe) cpu's to come out in bout 2 months. you'll be able to get the equivalent of the fx-62 for bout 1/3rd the price ;-)

best bang-for-buck card right now would be the 7900gt. ati are supposed to be releasing an equivalent to that soon though, x1900gt or something like that.
