editing/creating steering wheels

I have been playing around with the steering wheel files but they seem to be very limited in what you can actually do.
Basically, what I am trying to do (and this may not be possible) is to move or delete the LED displays and LCD display.

I have worked out how to delete the bits I don't want by editing the alpha channel and making the bits I want to delete black. This seems to work well as they just become invisable.

When I try and open the .gp4 file for the steering wheel in zmodler or 3deditor, I get a message to say the file is locked. Is there a way around this? I assume editing the .GP4 file will be the only way to move the bits I want.

If anyone could help with this that would be great.

Cheers,
Paul

BTW I'm still rubbish at Silverstone.

You can unlock the .gp4 files with gp4genius for the other questions, i've got no idea ;)

if you want to open a .gp4 file that's locked.. you have to open it with GP4Editor and then save it.. after that you can open it in ZM

Ok,

I got GP4 genius first and I can only open cars.wad with it. If I open that I get a wireframe picture of a car (ferrari I think) and no option to select a different .GP4 file. Have I got an old version, or am I doing something wrong? The version I have is 0.1.0

Then I tried gp4 editor, as suggested by Floris_Koop_GP4Freak, and their are no options in there to load or import shapes. Again, Is it me doing something wrong? I have version 0.12

Ignore that last post. I've just Version 0.6 of gp4genius and I can open .GP4 files with that.

cheers,

I still can't edit the wheels!!! I have opened them with gp4 genius and then saved them but the files are still locked. I've tried saving them with different names but nothing seems to work. The only file I can get to edit is some Mclaren wheel that I downloaded, but that is not ideal because it has been heavly moddified. Any other steering wheel that i've tried (about 10 including the orignal one) are locked when i try and open them with 3deditor or zmodler.

Can anybody help me?

Come on.. that's not that hard... With GP4Editor open the .gp4 file you want to edit.. and just SAVE IT... then import the .gp4 file in ZM and you can edit!

It says the file is locked and the save option is disabled in 3d editor.

I know thats why i'm posting in here.

Right this what is what I am doing.

1. Extracting the file from the cars wad
2. Opening it with GP4 genius (I can now see the wheel without textures in the preview panel)

3. Saving the file either as it's orginal name or a new name (makes no difference which.)
4. Try and open the file in 3Deditor (the lastest one) and get a message "File is locked, saved and export functions are disabled"

5. Try and import the file in zmodler, get the message "unable to read file: file may have an invalid header and/or is locked".

I'm not at home atm, so those error messages may not be 100% accuriate but it's something like that.

Doesn't make any difference if try and open in zmodler first.

Anyone any ideas?

you don't need gp4genius AND 3deditor... try using just 3deditor
-extract the gp4 file from the wad
-open it with 3deditor
-save
-import the file in zmodeler

3deditor still says it's locked, (like i said in my first post) and save and export option is disabled.

little trick, but dont tell anybody!

open the extracted file in 3deditor. (not genius or something else)
if this is possible, safe the file with the same name as .GP4, not .gp4.

does it work now?

I can't do that because the save option is greyed out on 3deditor.

Thanks anyway.

you dont do anything wrong, dunno why but the cockpit_wheel.gp4 is locked
you gotta make a new shape in zmodeler and get 378 objects or so ;)

Thanks. That what I thought might be the case. So all I have to do is create the same objects that are in the orignal wheel and it should work?

I assume if I don't create the parts I don't want (ie driving aid indicators) then it will crash the game. Is this right?

Thanks
paul..
