maybe ur right but monitor too should support games with good refresh rate as well higher resolution.
i had this problem before with my old monitor.after getting philips 17'inch flatron problem solved for me.
that's why these days monitor advertisements are specifying particular games support in their sites as well as newspaper adds.
maybe this is not the problem for intweb but i am explaining regarding zeppelin101 statement.
example
normally some 14" monitor less refresh rate without videocard won't support 1024 resolution in winXP but by pressing F8 when windows booting a menu will exist, there if we press "enable vga mode" and restart system to normal boot. after loading windows we can set to 1024X768 without any problem but when we play any games and set game resolution to 1024X768 it won't accept.
