What does it do?!?!

Hi,
could somebody please explain to me what the differential does? It doesn't say in the GPedia/ car set-up menus, and because it wasn't implemented untill GP3 2000, it doesn't say in the GP2 or GP3 manuals.

i think it controls how each wheel spins.
when cornering the outside wheel has further to travel, and therefore might want to spin a tad quicker.
