Trees in GP4 Question

i have no idea how the track making goes about, but the trees in gp4 - are they flat lines of 2d polys layered to make it look 3d, or are they proper 3d wholes?!

the trees are a huge letdown for gp4, and also marshalls. would it be possible if we were to make top have 'simple poly' marshalls or will this cause ridiculous slowness?

just an idea, as ive been analysing how much better f1c handles this and how that is made up.

dont know how f1c handles them, but gp4 is basically a square with alphas controlling transparency in the tex. marshalls i dont really notice too much around the track, but somewhere like the old hockenheim i would suspect there be a hit to the PO.

Nothing prevent you to replace 2D trees with 3D ones...
I'm thinking about it myself since a long time, but it's a long task and it's not sure everyone will handle the poly increase...

im sure lee1971 and karan will be albe to handle the 3d trees with their graphics card which they.ve showed off in the screenshot thread. haven't seen many recently. wonder why.

its not the gfx card its the processor and how that handles it.

mind you, the way forward is the amd 64bit and prices are dropping greatly and i reckon within 2 years most gamers will have them so theoretically on the basis of pc evolution, if we try to make 3d top halves of marshalls and trees in 3d im sure they can handle it.

Poly count? Who cares?? This is one big coverup by the goverment! ;)
Since when do people care about poly count? Look at the carshapes nowadays, nobody cares anymore. The only thing that WILL hit the PO is textures sizes.
So don't fear the new things, try it, test it and THEN start blaming it if it doesn't work. Don't start scaring people by forehand.

btw, Monaco has something that looks like an 3d tree. My pitcrew (3d muppets) could easily go for 3d marshals.

for trees , a proper way is making 6 to 10 faces each comes with a certain shape
if you look the tree from the top , if may look like this

\|/
-.-
/|\

from side , like this

map with textures with alpha channels.

well , that's one proper way which has been used in 3dgames over 10 years.

quite easily actually, just merged some default ZM cylinders, spheres and mix it all together. Then mapping it with the default marshall/pitcrew textures.

The only thing you need to do is bend, rotate, move some parts to create different muppet characters.

Maybe i will give those trees a go and see what happens...

How about making them (trees) swing a bit and leaves falling? Just kidding.

In theory it should be possible.
When you think about it, it's possible to have flags waving in the crowd.
Maybe it is possbile to make a flag with a tree texture. ;-)

I think every branch, leaf, etc should be more dense.
just an example...

was just browsing the latest rfactor shots and if rfactor is as editable as we're led to believe im sure we could pinch some stuff and see how and if it could be transfered.

besides that, rfactor is gone kick gp4's butt!
