ATi Radeon 9500Pro

I live in Britain and was wondering how much should I pay for one of these. My TNT2 Pro is getting on and with all the lovely hi-res updates I'm putting in the game the less and less its able to cope these days.

I would suggest that you get the Sapphire radeon 9500 128Mb non-pro card. It costs the same but you can get a little patch for the cards bios which allows it to run the same as a 9700 bit at half the cost. It works a treat. Komplett stock the card. Try to get the red PCB with the memory in the L configuration as some other PCB designs don't allow the mod. You can get the pathc and all instructions to do it at www.designtechnia.com. The cards are getting hard to find so you might have to do a bit of searching.

Whats the actual difference between the Radeon 9500 and the Radeon 9500 Pro? Is it worth getting the Pro version over the standard or not?

Can't the non-pro card be patched to run at higher speeds too? If I could get 9700 performance from a 9500 then I think I'll opt for that one - any prices on that Sapphire?

I think the Pro has a slighter higher clock speed than the non pro.

nop... the 9500pro can be "overclocked" to use the 8 pipelines (bcause they are 9700pro that didn't work perfectly with 8 pipelines, but u can actually turn they on... but olny on the pros...

Don't agree with that advice either....

I got the 9500 standard version tried all the mods etc. only to find it made very little difference if any ( I couldn't see it) plus it risks damaging the card.

Luckily the PC shop I bought it from straight swapped it for an Excalibur 9500 Pro and I tried the mods and overclocks on it too.

The card is so damn fast thought that I copied the original Bios back and just run it standard with no o/c at all.

So go for the 9500Pro version 128mb as they are competively priced now.

Gentlemen,

The mod is not an overclock! It doesn't make the card run at faster speeds. The only difference between the 9500 and the 9700 is the number of pipelines.

The 9500 pro is a different PCB to the 9500. The mod will only work on the 9500 using the 9700 PCB, which is the way the original 9500's were introduced. The mod is just enables all 8 pipleines in the processor and doubles the bandwidth to 256bit as opposed to 128bit. The pro version of this card cannot be modified in this way to give this extra performance.

The mod just modifies the bios on the card thus enabling the extra pipelines and bandwidth. It does not overclock the card so there is no risk of damage if you do things correctly. I have done it and my 9500 now has the same performance as a 9700. If yours didn't work either you didn't have the correct card (9500 non-pro, 128Mb on the 9700 PCB) or the patch wasn't applied correctly. If had the right card and applied the patch you would have noticed the difference

When looking for this card I've come across some strange labelling. Is this 9500 often referred to as a 9600?

If so then a Sapphire 9600 128mb is just £96 on overclockers.co.uk.

The 9600 replaced the 9500. But the 9500 is faster, confusingly.

The order of goodness is 9600,9500,9700,9800.
The pro is better than the non-pro in all cases.

get the Pro version and DO NOT bother with those mod bios etc.

they do not work correctly and WILL damage the card....

vik, they do work correctly and they will Not damage the card. All that is happening is the extra pipelines are being enabled. If the patch did not work correctly then all you have to do is a simple rollback and viola you have a normal healthy card again. If it proved too complicated for you to achieve then maybe you shouldn't be commenting on the proceedure
