To edit the alpha channel of the stwheel image(to determine what part of the image is seen, and which is invisible), In Paint Shop Pro(which is what I use), here's a basic tutorial:
1) Go to: File-->Preferences-->General Program Preferences.
2) Select the Transparency tab and change the colors 1 & 2, to colors other than pure black, and pure white(make it easier to edit, as you'll discover).
3) Load the stwheel's .tga file.
4) Select Mask-->Load From Alpha Channel. Then select the file's alpha(you'll see the transparent grid 'behind' the image.
5) In the color menu bar, select pure black(RGB=0,0,0) & pure white(RGB=255,255,255).
6) In the Mask menu, Select: Edit, and using the Paintbrush tool, the black will determine what gets seen, and the white will determine what's invisible.
7) Once alpha is edited to satisfaction, in the Mask menu, select: Save To Alpha Channel, and select: Alpha Channel 1.
8) Go to: File, and save the image, clicking 'yes' to the dialog boxes that pop up.
9) Load the saved tga again, and in normal drawing mode(not Mask mode) make sure the white background is black(you'll get a unsightly white line around the wheel and hands ingame otherwise). I always make a .bmp copy of the image with a black background, which i copy to the finished tga.
9) Save image to .tga, and use an editor to add it into the stwheel.tex file(I use GP4Master v1.00).
10) Pack into your cars.wad, and away you go!
