start again with default. delete all low res textures. then delete the old files of each car you install before installing the new version. this is because some cars use different textures to default and default ones are no longer needed.

erm, i never said loading times wudnt be effected, its in game that wont ebcasue everything is fetched udring loaidng and stuffed in the RAM, the wad doenst need to be accessed until you load again.

Loading times also suffer when u install hi-res cars tho,

Delete all LODfiles called car_team_carx_lod_35.gp4. The 35 in the LODs is probably a typo and game doesn't use them.

It's only after we've lost everything, that we are free to do anything.

also you can go into your gp 4 folderD:\GP4\MenuData\PC\GP2001\Videos and delete every file except for

BG_flag
BG_Rain - Light
BG_Tyretread
CornerL
CornerR
Straight3
wheel_lo_blur

that'll free up about 200 megs from gp4

then you can go to

C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache

and

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles note : ServicePackFiles may be named i386

copy them both to desktop then burn to disk for safetys sake
doing that cleared 400 megs from my hard drive
if when you install a new driver and it asks for these file just copy them back to your desktop then delete when finished.
also make sure hibernation is disabled and try to get yourself Norton Ghost 2003.that way you can disable system restore ,freeing up more space, but still have peace of mind with a backup on disk.

don't foget good old msconfig and services to free up more ram so as to reduce loading times

oh and you might want to "pay" for a program along the lines of Windows Washer to clear up all that shite that windows collects

hope that helps in anyway

the size of the wad will affect loading time but not the game speed directly.
but the wad is usually big because it has large hi-res textures and this will slow down the game.
with all hi-res (1024x1024) textures my itc mod is 92mb and very slow ingame (~230fps). (only 8 cars are in it so far, so i'll probably release with 512 textures, otherwise the wad will be close to 200Mb!)
another wad with no textures (cars are all white) is superfast (~70fps).

the original wads have texs named like this:
ferrari_1.tex
ferrari_2.tex
ferrari_3.tex
hi_ferrari_1.tex
hi_ferrari_2.tex
hi_ferrari_3.tex

with some setting(use 32 full??) you can choose which set to use - the hi_ (better quality) or normal.
if you need a smaller wad deletee the ones you dont use.

if you want to keep all the hi res cars then you'll have a big wad.

alot of the new cars come with one lod and these are copied down, taking up alot of room. not much you can do except ask the makers to make the lower lods.
I'd guess that a full 2003 set with all the best hi res cars, then 80-90mb is probably as good as it gets.

i got my cars.wad from 57 meg to 33 just by changing all the 1024x1024
textures to 512x512 and in gp4master doin the downsize textures instead of having 512x512 for each. this also made my game run faster on the slow ass pc of mine... i also resized the .tex files to 512x512.

and that was for only ONE car

bloody ferrari :)

Hi,

I have found that the 512x512 textures look fine. The larger textures do really take up so much space.
