What Rig is Fastest for GP4 ?

Bit of a survey I suppose on what you gurus think is the faster Rig for playing GrandPrix4 and other Racing sims ...

I have been a loyal Intel user since 1990 but my P3 rig is getting old now.

I have checked out some prices on a new rig and the salesman has been

pushing the AMD XP2400 as the fastest system for me. I told him

that apart from some email and word-processing I only play Grand Prix 4

and a few other Racing sim games (GPL & NFS6:HP2).

I got prices on both a Pentium4 2.4ghz and AMD XP2400 and although the

AMD system is slightly dearer it has more features and DDR ram.


What's the general consensus.... Pentium 4 or AMD XP2400 ???

Some wise words would be greatly appreciated as it is hell confusing !

Intel make safe processors, and AMD make performance ones!

AMD all the way. I have a xp2000+, and with a mx440 gfx i get 50fps at 1024x768.

I would say AMD as well.

Just note: the number that AMD gives (AMD 2400+) is not the real frequency, but the performance compared to Intel CPUs. My AMD XP 2200+ does really clock with 1,8Ghz, but is as fast as a P4 2,2 - that's why they call it 2200. In som ebenchmarks it is even a tiny bit faster than the intel CPU, hence the "+".

Since the AMDs are already way faster than the Intel CPUs with the same real speed (comparing P4 1,8 with AMD 2200 @ 1,8) you cannot really overclock them. In this respect the intel chips are better again.

Considering that AMDs are cheaper than Intels they are definately value for money = fast CPUs at god prices. What more can you want?

One thing I was told was that the AMD runs hotter than P4 and that the P4 2.4ghz is extremely good at overclocking so for the money the P4 is actually "more bang for buck" as it will o/c without the need for extra fans etc.

It is a difficult choice but I am leaning towards the P4 2.4 for those reasons and that I have always had Intel processors.

Can anyone tell me what is the maximum a p4 2.4 will overclock safely to without getting extreme with cooling add-ons ?

I also am a bit puzzled about the choice of Ram. The ASUS mobo (P4PE-Lan) that I am considering can take upto DDR333 but I see that mobo overclocks cpu and memory and I can get 512mb of Mushkin DDR400 ram for AUD$299 and it is supposedly very good ram.

Any P4 owners can comment ?

If u over clock your Intel CPU u will need a bigger fan and maybe a more powerful power supply. Over clocking is a bit dodgy anyway and u can end up damaging your mother board so make sure u get one that will allow u to over clock the cpu.

don't know about being dodgy as I have had my P3 700 o/c to 868mhz for 3 years now without a problem.

I read that the P4 2.2 o/c to 3.0 ghz no sweat and it runs cool like the previous P3 coppermine processors.

Are there any P4 users out there ? seems that AMD rules the roost amongst GP4 pilots ?!

I'm running a P4. Never had a AMD so can't comment but the P4 is pretty cool.

Actually, Vader, sorry to disagree with you, being a Lord and that, but the PR rating AMD uses is not related to the P4 at all, according to them.

It shows the relative performance compared to the original Thunderbird Athlon at a certain clock speed.

It just happens to conveniently measure up nicely to the P4, which is a nice coincidence don't you think?

Timm that is only correct up to 2200+ from then on i believe they admit to matching it to pentium 4s.
