I was making new telemetry stands for all the teams, but soon realised that it would be difficult to easily update or make a template for them all.
So I messed with the red bull design a bit and came up with these previews, you reckon this is a good design for a generic template for all the teams ?
Theres room for logo's on the roof, sides, back and base.
They contain less faces than the old plus stands btw ;-)

Here's the package for review, let me know what editing/workflow info you might need, and I can update the readme with the relevant details, I'll do video screen captures of any process that's unclear. it's easier to show than explain.
The Max file was made in 2010 x64 btw.

Thx guys, I'll go with this template as a base.
One thing I have noticed is the huge face count of the current plus stands and muppets, about 20,000 in total.
If I use animated 2d planes instead of 3d models for the engineers I can more than half that figure. The only problem being the engineer skin would be tricky to update, it would have to be done in max and rendered out as a sequence.
Current telemetry stand face count is around 700 faces each, thats 7,700 faces in total, 2d engineers would be 154 faces for all the teams.
So that would be 7,854 faces for the entire stands and muppets (why are they called muppets?) lets call it 8,000 ;-), a grand saving of 12,000 faces for detail in other parts of track, 3d kerbs/piano's fences etc.
I think current face limit is around 120,000 faces for tracks, is there a fixed face limit ?

When my hangovers worn off I'll post some comparison images.

Nicely detailed 2d planes. Animatable (zoom image to get rid of the jaggies)

Pug ugly and low detail 3d models. 650 faces each already without headphones and radios. Static.

I think you can guess where my preference lies, ;-) I could provide a max scene and skin template ready to render, to update all that would be needed is max trial once a year.

A valid point was raised by Big Bro' about PO hit with all the animations in the pitlane, I just tried a rough animation on all 11 stands, 7 animations per stand = 777 concurrent animations, I see no significanr frame/PO hit.

25% of CPU load is due to using fraps

I can't get youtube to display properly, mind you I am in a bar at the mo'.. could have something to do with it ;-)

I think I fixed it ;-)

This is strange, the animation seems to be affecting the sound :-O

I made slight progress with the model, here's a quick render in situ on the new 2012 Albert Park pitlane.
Next step is logo's and brands, I'll probably make this one HRT, the colour scheme is screaming for it. :-)

EDIT: oops, should have been a thumbnail....fixed.

Of course it looks gay, read the logo on the backs ;-)

For the PO , I see little impact in all tests, even one with hundreds of swaying trees, did you test it with full 2012 cars and textures ?

Does anyone know what logo HRT have on the roof of their stand ? I can't find any decent angles, thx.

Hmmm, good to know, my confidence is growing in this cranky little game engine :-)
