Bernie Ecclestone is not considering accommodating two Italian races on future F1 calendars, according to the Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat.

The newspaper's correspondent Heikki Kulta reported from Madonna di Campiglio this week that Rome's bid for a street race in 2012 endangers the historic Italian Grand Prix venue Monza.

Shortly before Christmas, Ecclestone confirmed an agreement for a seven-year race deal with Rome, hinting the layout would be close to the Vatican. "Every time there is an overtaking manoeuvre, we're going to put the black smoke up," he joked.

At the time of the initial announcement, reports suggested that the two races would both run in the same season. Gianni Alemanno, the mayor of Rome, said: "It's not true that it is an alternative to Monza. Monza is a grand prix on the circuit, and the grand prix of Rome is integrative to that of Monza, it's not a replacement."

However, the decision will ultimately be Ecclestone's. Spain currently has two grand prix, one at the Circuit de Catalunya and one on the streets of Valencia, and Italy hosted two events up until 2006, with the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola supplementing Monza. But with the introduction of a new race in Korea this year, and possibly another in India in 2011, the F1 calendar is getting close to having 20 races - an amount that would put intense pressure on the teams to get from venue to venue.

Great minds....

Could drop Valenica as well tbh... no Spanish races might cause some outrage but they should build a better circuit or go to Jerez :P

Dicking about aside...out of a choice between Monza and Rome, Monza wins every time. Even though I've seen no layout for Rome.

Its absurd... they are trying to reduce speed in a sport that HAS to be pure speed...

If I was a F1 driver, I would refuse to drive in Rome and boicot the race

He's an old man, what are the chances he can die before 2012?

Does it matter? We're all going to die in 2012 anyway.

In practice, I really can't see a race near the Vatican lasting too long, especially if there are support races before the GP itself, obviously due to the noise (this time it would be a legitimate complaint because the race wasn't there first).

given the wealth of the arab nations funding all these new tracks, can't they just invest in a flipping prop - that way they just replicate a landmark, stick it over bahrain. Hey presto - a new nation, without the worry of a new track. It'll be just as @#$%& as a new tilkedrone, but at a fraction of the cost.

Heck, we could have a 30 race calendar with 30 brand new tracks in time for 2011.

in architecture they call it a 'pastiche', replicating something of the past, ie, most notably with classical greek and roman design.

Typical tabloid reporting - there's no Bernie quote of the sort in the article!
