Trulli beat Button 12-5 in qually, illustrating the point further.

The main issue is what we mean by speed? Some drivers are blindingly fast over a single lap, but their race-craft is not as good (JT being an example). However some qualify badly yet consistently rise through the field due to good race-craft (although this is less noticeable nowadays with almost bullet-proof cars)
