Andretti had been driving F1 cars for many years before he won the 1978 title. He got the pole position in his first race though driving a Ferrari at Monza.

Best ever:
Schumacher
Prost
Clark
Senna
Stewart
Mansell

No one ranks statistically with the drivers you listed. I understand that.

Stewart BTW won only 5 more GP's than Damon. Fangio only 2 more than Damon. Different eras, and hard to make comparisons. Look boys, I don't have Damon Hill on a pedestal anymore than I do Jacques, but I do give them credit where credit is due. To say one owed it all to his car or he was lucky IS bullshit!

How many drivers get the best equipment and still haven't been able to do the job? How many suffer for years is piss poor cars before finally getting a break and landing in a good team? And then only manage a few odd wins. It's all relative isn't it?

I just don't understand why people constantly trash Damon Hill. Never have understood it. He accomplished far, far, more than 90% of the people who have ever raced a F1 car and yet still gets bashed. He would have been a two time world champ had Schumi himself not drove him off the F***ing road and took them both out. And lest you think that was a chance encounter look at Schumi trying to do the same thing to JV a couple of years later!

Who the best world champion is after Schumi and Prost is all relative. Those two tower over all the rest. But I personally feel Damon Hill ranks among the top, and to me it was as much for his off the track demeanor and class as it was his driving ability. Some love Senna.... I think he was a hotheaded prick. MY OPINION, same as how I feel Damon HIll was and is a class act all the way around....

Why is it that you guys have to lower yourself to such levels....this post has been reported by users and undoubtedly for it's poor content. I appreciate that you all have your differences of opinion but how about behaving with a bit of class and not lowering yourselves to such ridiculous levels. How do you think you all look to one off visiters or lurkers who drop in to browse through "YOUR" forums.....
Keep it nice fellas. That's all. :-)

Of course he had the best car on the grid, otherwise you can't win a championship. McLaren had the fastest, but Renault had the best.

He only won at Spa because Ralf wasn't allowed to win.

@alex - it was not sarcasm ;-) it was something else. :P

but i liked the reaction :)

IF Jenson does win the championship or a race i cant wait for the comments about it :) judging from this thread im sure they will be a nice laugh :)

One question... I fully agree with Nick's comments about winning the champ you need the best car...

But there must have been a time where not the best car won. And how to judge whether it was the best or not, you can look at their team-mate as a comparison...

Anyone here think post96 Damon wasnt committed as much? I mean having completed what he set out to do he had nothing else to do...

would you trust ralf schumacher to overtake his team mate, in teh rain, for your teams maiden win? ;)

and damon may have won teh WDC in 96 coz he had the best car, but most champions do. lets not forget he won races in 93, 94, 95, 96, overtook schumi's ferrari in an arrows and almost won, then won at spa. he may not have been teh bets champion, but he was certainly talented.

"Some love Senna.... I think he was a hotheaded prick. MY OPINION"

I think calling any driver a prick is pretty stupid really.
