no great corners, no action spots - just a 500 mile straight (with camber)

Beg to differ here. Pocono Turn 2 for example. And its far from a stright ;) Whats the difference between an oval left turn and a road course left turn?

Only 2 tracks are flat out, and there only flat out because the cars are restricted for safety reasons :)

Cept most tracks are becoming tilke dromes :P So what you get is a generic left right taken from sepand with enough run off to declare a small country in :P

Of course American oval racing isn't all about NASCAR despite the best efforts of Brian France and company.

Your right, we have the failure of IRL and CART :) And until they sort themselves out they will carry on killing each other. Only reason IRL is still afloat is the money from the Indy500 and Tony Georges deep pockets. The attendances at the races have been hillarious.

Then CART which has very little in the way of decent teams and drivers, and lets face it, who wants to see a series pretending to be the top of its class without the drivers and teams supporting it?

they need to sort it out between themselves instead of trying to better each other, otherwise it really will be a case of the only top series being NASCAR run

what sort of attendances?

back to f1 in usa - even with one or 2 drivers it wouldnt really catch on - america is very inward looking, and the american series now are mostly (i think) north and south americans. as in evry other major sport america would rather make a new game than play with everyone else. with many usa drivers theres rivalries, american dreams, and a few other cliches.

what sort of attendances?

I'll find exact numbers if you want, but IRL Richmond last year wasnt even 1/4 full, whilst NASCAR sold out weeks in advance for the same track.

edit: Done some basic research

In 2002 NASCAR winston Cup averaged 190,940 fans per race (according to goodyear)
In 2002 IRL averaged 44,053 excluding the Indy 500, 67,782 if including the Indy500
In 2002 CART Averaged 47,383 per race excluding Milwaukee and Long Beach which had no attendance figures. Remember CART has no major event such as the Daytona 500 and the Indy 500 though

And its not like like this is because NASCAR Runs larger tracks. Texas (1.5Miles) seating is 150,000. IRL and NASCAR use this. Daytona (2.5 miles) is just 160,000.

2002 Daytona 500 attracted 11.5-million television viewers nationally, to 5-million who watched the 2002 Indy 500, according to Nielsen Media Research. It also said the least-watched Daytona 500 ever, in 1980, was viewed by 6.1-million fans, more than any of the past six Indy 500s.
