Michelin's motorsport director Pierre Dupasquier admitted that they should have brought softer compounds to the Spanish Grand Prix weekend after Bridgestone runners Ferrari ran away with a dominant victory at the Circuit de Catalunya on Sunday.
Michelin did get two cars on to the Barcelona podium, but second-placed Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya could do little to trouble Michael Schumacher as the world champion won by over half a minute.

After the race Dupasquier revealed that Michelin had not experienced the tyre wear rates they had expected at the Spanish track, meaning they could have afforded to run softer, and hence faster, compounds.

"There were many positive aspects - not least that two of our drivers finished on the podium," said Dupasquier in a press release. "Generally, though, we adopted too conservative an approach to this race.

"The two compounds we brought with us this weekend were both used in the race - and they showed very little wear at the end of a stint. We knew this race would be tough but we overcompensated by bringing tyres that were a little bit too hard.

"That said, I don't think this accounts for the difference between Michael Schumacher and the rest. We might have been able to gain two or three tenths through tyre performance - and he was more than a second per lap faster than all his rivals."
