I remember another incident where Senna deliberately spun and stalled his car during qualifying to ensure the session was red flagged and he retained pole.

it was at magny cours (french gp) 1991

it doesn't make any sense. he started the race in 4-th behind patrese, prost, mansell ?!?!

or was it the friday qualy he wanted to stop.

According to the season review, he spun trying to set a lap time after oil had been dropped by Grouillard.

I remember Brundle mentioning it in commentary once, where he thought Senna had tried to take the corner far too fast, knowing the line was just around the corner, and spun as a result. Irregardless, he'd lost too much time on the oil, so he was never going to beat Patrese, who'd set his time just before Grouillard had blown up.

Senna started 3rd IIRC.
I think Grouillard didn't just blow up, his engine started blowing and instead of pulling off the track he kept driving for several laps with oil spraying out the back. Hakkinen failed to qualify by a fraction of a second because of it.
It pissed a lot of drivers off.

Just checking out Grouillard's wikipedia article and this made be chuckle.

Apparently James Hunt referred to Grouillard as "a problem".

Seems he had a reputation as a blocker.
