Old crash. who was this?

Hi all,

many years ago, when I was beginning to watch F1 back in the 80s, I remember a spectacular crash of a car that went on a straight at full speed and that went up in the air in several twists. I was always under the impression that this had been Elio de Angelis on a Lotus, and that he had hit the car ahead of him, but after having looked for it, I now have some doubts. Does anyone remember a crash like this, who can help me identify the pilot and the track?

Thanks.

Alex

This is the one that first came into my mind. It's not F1, it's F2, but it might be the one that you're thinking of. It was Manfred Winkelhock at the Nurburgring in 1980.

EDIT: Video doesn't want to show, here's the link:

Were the cars white? If so, it should have been Monza 93, and the crash involved the two Minardis just on the last lap on the main straight!

Thank you both, but unlikely. We didn't get much beyond F1 in TV back then, and I remember the camera angle: the car is going horizontally on the screen from left to right, so you see its side.

As for the Minardi, 93 might be old enough, but I was guessting 80s. Going to look for those and check.

Heh :-) I remember this. No, it was not Fitipaldi, but thanks anyway.
It is something older, I guess

If it was the Minardi crash at Monza, then the guy going through the air would be Christian Fittipaldi, I think. Not sure who the other guy would have been.

Was Pierluigi Martini.

But I think that he is reffering to the Didier Pironi´s crash at Hockenheim 82.

Yes that was 1992. That was De Cesaris in 1985 during the Austian GP. Big crash but luckily he tumbled in the soft soil and not the hard tarmac like Villeneuve and Pironi.

It might be, it fits the idea I have of the circuit. But I could not find a video, so I can't say for sure.

Pironi's car didn't fly did it? He just slammed into the back of Prost and that's what caused the damage? De Cesaris didn't hit another car either, he just got flipped by the earth bank.

I think everything's been mentioned that I can think of in F1 - only the Damon Hill light flip-flop at Estoril in '94 hasn't been posted.

I guess it's too late and not F1, but it sounds awfully like Michael Andretti's spectacular crash at Mid Ohio in what... 1998? Car colour matches too.

lol!

@ gav: according to the articles that i readed, Pironi crashed with Prost and he flown about 100 metres, and the nose crashed vertically with the tarmac...

And just for kicks, ALMS Mid Ohio, similar accident in the same place.

I remember I've seen another champ car/indycar crash, concerning a red car (the one sponsored by Target, like Zanardi's) which started flipping after passing under a bridge... any info?
