Why they went to a V10 in 1996 I can't understand. They should have stayed with this. It sounds fabulous, one of the best developed engines of 1995, but lacking in ultimate reliability. Turn it up and enjoy! :)

Everyone knows that million-to-one chances happen 9 times out of 10; indeed, it's a common requirement in fairy tales. If the human didn't have to overcome huge odds, what would be the point? Terry Pratchett - The Science Of Discworld

There's one of your reasons right there. V10 means less moving parts which lowers the chance of something going wrong. It is more fuel efficient and has more torque than the V12.

Don't know what sound clip it is (no doubt one I've go already, as I love this soooo much), but that picture is of the '94 car (awesome beast that it was).

one of the best developed... yet lacking reliability. that doesnt sound like a well developed engine at all, a well developed engine has maximum reliability.

and i dont think f1 regulators set rules based on how an engine sounds.

Yeah, had it already as I thought (couldn't listen to it at work) and it's labelled as 1994 here. Frankly anyone who thought that was a Renault V10 needs their head checked. :P

On the other hand, if your such a freak you can recognize f1 engine sounds and lable them as car X from year XXXX just by hearing it, i think you have a little but too much time and too less social life... ;)

Considering it was the only V12 at the time I didn't think it was too difficult. ;)

Wouldn't be able to guess the year necessarily, but that car was rather famous for sounding like God.

Lest we forget, it was driven by God also. :)

From what I remember, the V12 was not developing the correct power/torque at the rev ranges that the V10's did. Even though the V12 revved higher than the V10, and developed more power, it was at the cost of of driveability and reliability. The 3.5L V12 was good, but the 3.0L version, that resulted from the 3.0L engine rule change, killed the V12 Ferrari engine in F1. Watching Alesi throw away his career while thrashing around in those V12's was heartbreaking. BTW: That driver in the preview of that clip looks like Alesi. Might be wrong though.

the traction controlled 3.5l ford V8 in the benetton was a better engine, it did most things better then the ferrari (except the sound, and the top speed, which was irrelevant at a lot of tracks).

I think that the V10 replaced the V12 because that and because too, the V12 has more weight than the V10

The reliability of the V10 wasn´t the better, remember France 96: Michael Schumacher´s engine blown in the warm up lap! ;)
