F1 safety to improve next season
26 September 2007

[f1.gpupdate.net]

According to our colleagues at Autosport.com the FIA revealed plans to further raise cockpit sides to improve protection for Formula 1 drivers next season. The issue was raised after a number of drivers were concerned about their safety in the cockpit.

David Coulthard and Alexander Wurz heavily crashed last year where Coulthard's rear wheel missed Wurz' head with only a few inches. These kind of incidents could go awfully wrong when a wheel would hit a drivers' helmet. A higher side of the cockpit should make the cockpit much safer to drivers.

GPDA director Mark Webber told autosport.com: "It will be great for us. If you look at someone like Tonio Liuzzi, he is not getting the support that he needs, and I am borderline as well. There are a few guys that don't get the protection.

"Both the guys involved in that nasty accident in Australia, Alex and David, were the two guys pushing it very hard. David obviously felt something had to be done after sliding across the car, and Alex felt the same after having an F1 car pass his visor."

Sounds good but isnt it already bit late to change rules what have some effect to design of car in this point of season??

jos verstappen's rear wheel hit martin brundle in the head (brazilian GP 1994) and nothing happened. The same would be If coulthard hit wurz

When you say 'hit', it was the lightest of lightest of brushes, and he was still knocked unconscious.

unconscious? I remember watching the race and he walked away like nothing happened. And even If he was knocked unconscious it's no big deal, why was he getting 5-6 millions per season? Boxers get unconscious all the time, and some of them doesn't even earn a dime.

then they should just make the cars with encolsed cockpits.
end of story. Why they didn't do that 30 yrs ago. It's not a hi-tech issue

I know, how about the drivers just sit in the pits and drive by remote control instead?

If it doesn't affect the racing then it's all good.

What a load of fuss over nothing! All they are likely to do is raise the sides so that they are closer to the top of the helmet than they currently are. It's hardly going to take much away from the racing...

but what happens when someone goes underneath another car from behind, and the wheels hits teh helmet face on?

Great, so with a lack of numbers on the cars it will be even harder for some people to know who is who!

I do think the tracks are too safe (we've been there before though), but there's nothing at all wrong with making the cars a little safer. Yeah, it was nice to see Alesi's head hanging out over the side-pod, but it was madness. Ratzenberger, Senna and Wendlinger's accidents weren't freak ones, they just served as a reminder as to how complacent F1 had become over safety, and doing so again will only lead to the same. It's pure luck that Wurz can still walk. He was within a couple of inches of being another catalyst.
