Speed exit, Vettel in the STR, also in 2008

Via formule1.nl news just reached me that Speed has been fired (without reasons officially, but t seems logical due to his bad results ánd his little fight with Tost).

Vettel is now second driver for STR, and Glock will replace him at BMW as testdriver.

It's all good and well having a fun-loving team, but I've always had the distinct impression both Speed and Liuzzi had their fun away from the team rather than actually bothering trying to take them forward.

Gerhard and the RBR drivers show how the balance should be achieved.

Vettel was good in his debut, i'm looking forward to seeing him drive regularly. don't care much for Speed, or the whole of STR really though.

Well i think that there will not be so big difference between Speed and Vettel. First of all STR should start to think about their car and then about drivers. At European GP even experienced drivers made mistakes, it was a river not a track, os it isn't drivers fault.

We don't know anything about what happened. For all we know he could have been accusing the team of sabotaging his car during the pitstop.

He seems to think that the team's had it in for him from the off, but if that's the case why was he offered a new contract at the start of the season? He could have wandered off elsewhere, or they could have hired someone else. It's fairly obvious to me the relationship has only deteriorated in the last couple of months.

A shame IMHO. I am in the minority who actual rate Scott Speed ... OK he's no Fernando Alonso, but I believe he's got the pace and the motivation to be in F1, and he's a character! We've got far too few of them around at the moment! He's not been given a great opportunity to show his skills since the STR is so appalling, and to be frank I doubt that Vettel will do any better. Saying that also applies to the converse; if you'd have put Scott Speed in the BMW Sauber for the US GP, he would certainly have scored that point.

I agree with you, Locke Cole. I'm one of the few that think's that he's better than Liuzzi too, but oh well... all of the people that seem to have any personality at all are leaving F1!

I don't like it when teams kick out drivers mid season and i feel sorry for Scott, whilst i do rate Vettel higher than Speed i doubt that Vettel will bring any points for the team.

The problem with Speed was his temper. I think he is better than the other tonio who for me has been over rated from day 1.

If speed keeps some backing from redbull maybe he will find a drive in another team, but with the usa gp being dropped str dont really need him.

I think Seb could find himself in the other car by spa.

I don't know why everyone rates Vettel so high. His race at Indy wasn't great he finished behind a Red Bull and a Toyota and was off the pace that the BMW Sauber should be. Speed got screwed and Tonio will too. Vettel I think may go just as fast as Speed and Luizzi but thats it. Toro Rosso suck.

Count me among "the few" also. Given a team that knows how to bring a young driver along and a decent car Speed would be a respectable F1 talent. I hope he gets another chance, as its obvious he got zero support this season.

Wonder how long Vettel will last once Berger and Tost lose patience with him?

And Luizzi needs to start packing his bags now...;)

Liuzzi has always dissappointed me btw, in the former f3000 he was very good, but his former teammate in the f3000 Doornbos (who was beaten fair and square by Liuzzi) is slamming Bourdais's ass in the ChampCars now, while Liuzzi is driving constantly in the backfield in f1.

In short, i'd switch with Bourdais if i was Liuzzi ;)

the ChampCar comparison doesn't work too well IMO, they're all the same cars and engines in CCWS aren't they? we all know the STR is far from a front-running car.

Hmm not as well as I thought he should have/could have.

But an ok debut.

And yes I am sore he stole JB's record of youngest point scorer!!!!!! Only because of the new points system!!!

Button only held that record because DC got disqualified for his frontwing being the wrong dimension or wrong height from the ground at the Brazilian GP or something, didn't he?

so everything JB has won in F1 had been under dubious circumstances ;)

(1st point when someone got DQ'ed, 1st win in the rain when everyone else retired ;))

DC's first points came at Montreal in 1994 - he finished 5th. He retired from his debut race 2 weeks before.
