Britain’s most recent Formula 1 world champion, Damon Hill, looks set to return to frontline action in the Grand Prix Masters series.
The former Williams ace retired disillusioned from Formula 1 at the end of 1999. and vowed never to race again after a disappointing final season with Jordan.
But now the recently elected president of the BRDC looks set to make a triumphant return to racing in the self-styled senior’s tour alongside other champions such as Nigel Mansell and Emerson Fittipaldi.
“I am very tempted by the series,” Hill told weekly newspaper Motorsport News.
“I have spoken to Nigel Mansell about it and it sounds very exciting.”
Hill could make his debut as early as the August 13 round at Silverstone – scene of his British Grand Prix victory in 1994.
The 46-year-old added that he would relish the prospect of racing against his former Williams team-mate Mansell.
The pair competed together for four races in 1994, when Mansell shared the Williams seat left vacant by the death of Ayrton Senna with David Coulthard.
But by that stage Hill was the team’s designated title contender and Mansell was very much in the back-up role.
Damon says he would love to see how the pair would match up on equal terms.
“I never did get the chance to race against him properly in Formula 1, because the timing just wasn’t right,” he said.
“In fact, I spent most of my early career being a test monkey for Nigel so I would love to get out there and give him a run for his money.”
Hill has not raced competitively since quitting F1, and despite always maintaining he had no interest in returning to that side of the sport, Damon admitted a recent run in a pukka DTM Mercedes at Brands Hatch had rekindled his fire.
“You should never say never,” he said.
“Driving that car made me think twice about not racing again.”
Quadruple world champion Alain Prost has also been linked to GPM, although it remains unclear when the Frenchman will make his debut.
