Renault extends Fisichella's contract

The Renault F1 team today announced that it has come to an agreement with Giancarlo Fisichella to extend his contract for another season. Fisichella has won one race this season and is currently fourth in the championship.

Well for me that says that Kimi has signed for Ferrari and the Reanult test driver will be with Fissi I think???

It's true, then.

I get the feeling Renault were backed into a corner here, with Kimi still holding out to see what he wants to do next year they couldn't risk losing Kimi AND Fisi. Kovaleinen might be good but he can't lead a team like Renault. And who knows, Kimi may still end up at Renault yet - but just in case, it makes sense for Renault to cover their backs. Fisi CAN put in some good performances, but I bet he's relieved about this one because he hasn't earned that extension.

I agree with that, I'm a Fissi fan, but I doubt that this was the smartest choice by Renault, but Locke Cole is right, it looks like a lot of this particular signing came down to the fact that Kimi is still a bit undecided for next year.

Well It was clearly no Choice FOR Fissichella but a choice FOR whoever replaces Alonso (Kovalainen for sure). It would make sense in the way that Briatore is Kovalainen´s Manager and he knows what Fissichella is worth (or NOT worth). So he could put in his new hot Talent without expecting him to have a hard time even though he might struggle a little now and then. It has always been Briatore´s way to treat HIS drivers in way they would benefit, and despite the whole FISSICHELLA IS A CHAMPION talk for the media, Flavio knows that Fissichella is a driver for Points but not the winner. The only reason to keep him is some sort of balance and the benefit of the new guy

ugh i am bored of Fisi after all these pointless years....should have signed montoya or something...

it will be Heikki and Fisico for Renault and Kimi will go to Ferrari .Flavio said earlier that Heikki isnt going anywhere else than Renault and Heikki has said that he will not be a test driver after this season.

a sensible move to be honest, they're losing Alonso, so they keep Fisi to not rock the boat too much, to keep things fairly steady, and if they bring in Heikki, he will have someone with experience to guide him (Fisi).

then they can get rid of Fisi after a year when he underperforms again, and when the new guy (Heikki or whoever it may be) gets used to everything.

I bet that with Alonso going to Mclaren and Fisi staying will make him feel more comfortable and i expect to see him perform better. He is one of those drivers who is temperamental and underachieves when things are not going his way but when he is up he can drive really well. It was the best decision for Renault given his vast experience and it also gives Fisi time to silence his critics if he can.

Renault should have bargained on Montoya for a season much better than Fisico

@ Mikef1, i think the contrary, he underperforms while he has a world champion who wins many races as a teammate, surely that should be enough motivation to do better?

with someone he can easily beat alongside him, he can only perform worse than he currently does.

fisi just aint got the talent to be in the top teams. he needs to stand down and let more consistant drivers do the driving. stick webber in the renault along side kimi.

Put Button back behind JV where he belongs, at Villeneuve has been consistant and on top of the car and hasn't complained at every possible opportunity
