A driver taking part in a support race at the British Grand Prix died on Sunday after a heavy crash.

David Heynes, 56, from Oxfordshire, was competing in the Historic Sportscar Challenge when he crashed his Lotus into a tyre wall at the Becketts Corner. He received treatment at the scene and at the circuit medical centre where he was pronounced dead.

The incident came on a day when the circuit authorities were already reeling from the security lapse that allowed a man to get on to the circuit during the British Grand Prix.

it wasn't mentioned in the race because it happened after it, in the final event of the day (I would have thought the GP was the last event of the day but apparently not) he was driving a 1958 Lotus 15 so its not surprising that a crash at Becketts would be very dangerous

Hmm, good question. I better check my 2001 tape and 2002 DVD for it

It is always sad to see or hear a fatal accident around the circuits around the world.

My condolences to his family and friends. :(

we left the circuit after the slow down lap of the grandprix so we did'nt see that accident

we usually wait til after 5 to leave the track and watch the historic race

this year we just happend to finish our reconasssiance of the track for taking photos near where our car was parked and we left rightaway

i'm sorry for the driver that lost his life but am glad in a selfish way that i did'nt witness the crash

we usually stand at that part of the track

I walked around the circuit during the after show concert and his car was burried in the barriers (like Montoya's testing accident a few months ago). I didn't realise that the accident had taken place at the time and when I got their (after walking the circuit backwards) there was a few police cars there. It was only the next day how serious I realised this accident was. I thought the police cars were there because it was a very expencive car. RIP in peace
