what a disgrace the fans and management were this evening.

To try and get your players to leave the field of play because of a quick free kick decision, was disgraceful.

The way the fans reacted to this by throwing objects on the pitch at the players was equally disgraceful.

Also have to mention the way the police acted towards the away fans when the top tier was opened to the united fans and they started pouring in, moving the fans towards the front up against the fencing.

Shades of Hillsborough again, although thankfully it didnt end in such a tragic way.

Questions need to be asked why the french security/police were hitting fans with their batons when they were trying to climb over the fencing to safety.

Hopefully an enquiry into Lilles away fans enclosure and general safety measures will be brought up by EUFA.

I can just imagine the uproar if this was a English football club that did this.

Didn't know there were problems again :S

Still angry about the Feyenoord incident in Nancy, it's ridiculous to punish a club if there were just seperate guys wo make a mess of things, and have nothing to do with the sport football, which is in 99% of the cases.

Glad about the victory over Arsenal of our carnaval celebrating farmer's club, PSV though ;)

Sapo, they punish the clubs because sometimes those fans are members of organized "crowds" that are associated to the club. It happens in Brazil, and besides, punishing the club hopefully will show those mindless bastards that they only hurt themselves by doing so.

It's always a shame when those incidents happen in football :(

The quick free kick, BTW, was completely legal, and it's Lille's own damn fault they either weren't aware that you don't have to have a whistle to take the free kick, and it's as soon as the ref feels the wall's 10 yards, or they just weren't paying attention. The disallowed goal they had I thought was the right decision too, and I don't just say this as a United fan.

Isn't it odd? The ref was pretty much crap all game, save for the 2 decisions he got spot on, namely both goals.

The wall doesnt even have to be 10 yards back if the attacking team wants to take the kick quickly.

Anyway it was a disgrace, the whole game.. after the reports of crushing in the man u fans section, my mind went to hillsborough and i feared the worst. I really didnt care what was happening in the first half.

Then in the 2nd it was an ok game, nothing brilliant though, the lille goal was arguable, i thought Vidic may have gone down a bit too easily, but you can never know for sure, and i think from the view the ref had he probably made the right decision..

The Man U goal was perfectly legal, Thierry Henry is a specialist at it. What followed the goal should get the frenchies kicked out imo.

First the walking off, then the crowd trouble. Gary Neville got a cut on his head from the debris being thrown at him.

The only thing that amused me the whole night was seeing Fergie having a go at Gary Neville for getting involved lol.

Not in this case, those guys don't give a damn about Feyenoord get's punished or not, so they won't hurt themselves, only the normal fans. Feyenoord already warned the local autorities there would be coming lots of people, which had definately NOT a entrance card, and were only coming for riots and destruction.

It's almost the same as if i would be a Chelsea fan, than i'd buy myself an Arsenal shirt, go to the nearby's of the Arsenal stadium, and smash everything into peaces. Arsenal get's punished, and Chelsea has got rid of them ;)

If anything lille should be kicked out, thats not what football should be about, it was like a school playground. They got upset and tokk the ball and pretty much said we've had enough

I heard they were complaining to UEFA about the ref because of the free kick, I think they should just forget about it and hope that UEFA don't kick them out, which is likely to happen imo. Can't see them beating Man Utd at Old Trafford anyway :P

I haven't seen the play but know what's being talked about regarding the free kick. The ref doesn't have to whistle, I believe, but he MUST gesture showing his permission for the set piece to be taken. I think it's one of those dodgy areas in the rules

The ref has to do nothing more than walk away if the player wants to take it quickly, thats why most teams in the premiership stand someone right infront of the ball until the wall is set up now.

Yep, and the ref walked away. Twas a beauty by Giggs though. For those who haven't seen it:

The original ITV replay commentary, great analysis by David Pleat. He is spot on, Lille just weren't aware, and it's their fault. All the ref did was probably say to Giggs "You can take it", he walked away, Giggs knocked it in, and the goalie and the wall were none the wiser. I can't find the video of Lille's disallowed goal, but I know Vidic is a fairly burly bloke, and he doesn't normally go down very easily, he's one of the few players to hold his own in the penalty area, so I think the ref was right to disallow their goal.

It's just the refs fault, he should give time for the goalie to setup his wall.

Bloody ref ;)

So a team doesn't have the right to defend itself? I'd have of course loved if it happened in favor of my team, but it's still cheap (of the ref's part)

Its happened loads of times in the premiership, so its not the refs fault really is it?

Nope not so slowly anyway, they commited the foul so they can get themselves organised as quickly as possible, or stand someone right infront of the ball so the player can't take it quickly. The Ref would then have to ask the player to move back, meaning the ball would not be allowed to play quickly and they would have to wait for the 10 yards to be set.

I don't mind if my team was to benefit from it, but I think it's not a good example of fair play.

neither is diving and rolling around on the floor after minimal contact, or harrassing the officials, but thats also part of football nowadays.

The only truely sporting act i saw recently ( and this was a few years ago) was when Paulo Di Canio stopped the play when the opposition goalie went down injured

neither is trying to take down a player who you think might score just to get your defense organised.
