no way a penalty, poor aussie's.

2 critical descisions the ref got wrong there. Never a red, never a penalty.

Not really suprising given the officiating in the tournament so far. Would be nice if FIFA would do something useful to try and sort the refs out

Oh here we go. Italy are the spawn of Satan and musn't be allowed through. Australia had a bloody good chance to win it. More possession because Italy were down to 10 and they still only had 4 shots on target. Italy were the better team 11v11. Lucas Neil invited the "dive". Should of stayed on his feet and it would of been ok.

No penalty at all, and LS, I prefer Italy over Australia anyways and if you go by dirtyness, I still pick Italy!

By the way, ball posession doesn't mean that much, in the first half Italy controlled the game but had less posession because they were quicker with the ball and with creating opportunities while Australia just passed it around.

It's a shame for the game to end like that though, with the numerical advantage on the field Australia grew on the game and it should have gone to P.K.s that one, but Grosso had to trip over the Aussie defender...

This is where technology needs to be used in football. The Italian player clearly dived, he could have stayed on his feet if he wanted to. I don't blame the referee for giving the penalty though, as at first I thought it was a penalty before seeing the replays.

It needs to be kicked out of the sport, especially in tournaments such as the world cup.

Would love to see what you would say if Gerrard or Lampard did the same in the World Cup Final...no doubt call it ingenious?

Diving is wrong but meh it happens....just look at the Portugal vs. Holland game yesterday a masterclass in it.
Italy where the better team on the day tbh. They where better with 11 men. Held their own with 10 men even though it wasnt a Red Card in the first place.

Kinda glad the Aussies have gone home tbh because no more friggin tim cahill! he is bloody annoying as is every other everton player.

FIFA is too stubborn though. In Brazil we've had for years the referees using this non-toxic white powder to mark the spot of the ball and the wall in free kicks, and we were testing a ball with a chip inside of it to help referees when you are not sure if the ball has gone out or in the goal, for example. The ball has been 100% error-free and both Penalty and Adidas manufactured them (Adidas only had it in internal testing) and the chip doesn't alter in anything the performance of the ball.

Also, maybe showing those replays in the stadiums to end with so many extremely important wrong calls in the games. This one will never happen though.

Of course FIFA is stubborn - after all it's got FIA in it.

*sniff* :( A big let down after 90 minutes of excellent football. I didn't mind who won the game, but for it to happen like that is a shame.

dude, Australia may have given free kicks, but some of the Italian fouls were deliberate and malicious, eg Aloisi been shoved from behind and Bresciano being taken out. last night, Australia's fouls were clumsy at worst.

add to that the blatant diving- worse than the 'penalty' was Del Piero falling down like he'd been shot two steps after being brushed from the side. that sort of play really @#$%& me and is the number one reason i'm not a fan of soccer. but that's the way it is.

the penalty shouldn't have been awarded, but the Italian (sorry I don't know his name) knew exactly what he was doing and milked it for all its worth so good on him. bugger of a way to go out though!

Italians defended brilliantly, Australia really didn't look like scoring aside from a chance or two, Italians looked far more dangerous the few times they came forward.

and yes, I am bitter and twisted! bring on Rugby World Cup next year!

if I was in your position I'd be fuming, I can understand you perfectly. I think Grosso honestly tripped on the Aussie, but in his mind it was a penalty so he was asking for it (95% of players ask for a foul even if it didn't happen and they know it) and the ref somehow saw a PK there. Really shameful. And Gareth, some Italians were dirty, no doubt at all, but it just seems as if the Aussies have more dirty plays but no because they do it on purpose, just because of the rugby mentality.

gui you've got this idea in your head that australians bring rugby with them to any sport they play...every one of the socceroos grew up playing soccer, not rugby, believe it or not we're not a country where every kid plays rugby.
