Which Direct X

I am still using Direct X version 7, and do not have any problems.
I have read that upgrading to DX8.1 can improve performance and framerate. However the Microsoft website has warnings that 8.1 could reduce performance on some applications. If i install 8.1 and it doesn't work it appears that i would be stuck with it as it can't be removed.
Should I risk upgrading or not.
I run GP3 2000 in hardware mode on a Celeron 400 with integrated i810 graphics (framerate of 21 with mirrors and some textures off)
Any opinions / advice would be appreciated.

There is a DirectX remover freely available on various sites. If you really want to be rid of v8.1, it can be done with relative ease.

You can get a Direct X uninstaller there. It is called DirectXbuster" - it supports v8.1, but it's in BETA stages so beware....
