I don't mean to use this topic as a Q&A session but just wondering over a couple of things...

Just to get an idea of time-scales for an amateur, how long does a professional track-builder like yourselves take to build a track from scratch?

Also, if I were to build a street-circuit based on my hometown, is there any limitations I need to know if I was trying to build it like-for-like, i.e. buildings etc.?

And finally, following on from the like-for-like build - a question about pitlanes, is it possible for the pitlane to be nowhere near the start-finish line (further along the circuit)? Is there a limit to how far away pit lane can be led away from the circuit?? i.e. Entry and exit routes...

Many thanks :-)

1. A track layout and a first basic 3D visualisation can be done in maybe one or two hours (it depends a lot on the fidelity and attention you want to deliver). I speak about a track having a shape done on top of a background picture with 0 building.

2. Limitations are quite high but for the number of sectors wich is around 1500 for track and 300 for pitlane. (For a global length idea, 1 sector = 16 feet)

3. No, pitlane must start before S/F line and end after S/F line. There's no work-around. I don't know how far the pitlane can run away from the track though.

Once I build this track:

The track works without any problems. So as you can see, the pitlane can be quite far away from the track without causing any trouble. The distance in my track between track and pitlane might be around 250m.

A pitlane on a back straight like it was at Keimola isn't sadly possible.

Thanks for the advice - let the track-building begin....! :-)

It's Look interesting

Brill! What a track! :-o

One final question - is there a way of pasting an image from say Google Earth and then trace the track sectors over it??

simply convert your google picture into a 32bit TGA file (non RLE encoded).
Then in GP4 Builder, create a new flat surface with a size in m equal to the size in pixels of your tga picture and create a new texture selecting your tga file to apply on this flat surface.
Scale the flat surface to the correct dimension (because your picture is surely not using 1px = 1m as scale).

Thanks.

I'm looking for the .gp4 file for the corresponding .dat I've selected to use but struggling to find them in my directory, in this case Melbourne 2001.

Any ideas??

You can find it under maps/melborne2001.

;-)

Also, I spend a lot lot more time with making the basic layout and basic visualization than what Lo2k said, but then again he said it depends a lot on how detailed you want to make your track - and I'm obsessed with the details of my .dats.

Still, I find it immensely satisfactory to see my track in-game, so it worth spending the minutes and hours for me.

Good luck, and feel free to ask any question. :-)

Thanks atticus! :-)

I'm intending to make it as detailed as possible - appears that the possibilities are endless. :-o

Think I may need to re-install my GP4 as I can't find the .gp4 files in the MAPS folder. I have a couple of emulators on my pc and it appears Windows may have converted them for me. Are the .gp4 files named as 'melborne2001_track' - '..._pitlane' and '...pitverge'??

Also, when I switch from Camera to Graphics, it pops up with a Access Violation message - is this normal??

No, you misunderstood and I have been lazy with the explanation.

To find your track's .gp4 file (in your case melborne2001.gp4) do as follows:

1) Get the appropriate track's .wad file (in your case melborne2001.wad) from the main GP4 directory. I always copy it to my eventual folder I use to store the files associated with the new track.
2) Unpack it with e. g. WadUpdater.
3) The unpacked folder will be called xxx2001, in your case melborne2001. This folder will contain three subfolders called 'fonts', 'maps' and 'samples'. Under 'maps' you find 'resources' and xxx2001, in your case 'melborne2001'. In the latter, you will find the necessary .gp4 file, the .bins, the .col, etc.

I will have a look into that. Thanks.

Hi,

Success - I've managed to get the .gp4 files but now I have a access violation error message popping up. Unfortunately 'ma Français c'est un peu rouillé' so I'm not sure what it means or what I can do to overcome it....

Violation d'accès à l'addresse 00596871 (there a few numbers that pop-up) dans le module 'GP4 Builder 1.841.exe'. Ecriture de l'adresse 00000000.

Hmm, it's just a generic error. Either the .gp4 file is corrupted, either GP4Builder.exe is. For the latter, you can download it again and try to open the .gp4 file again.

Feature request for Laurent - The ability to export / import .gp4 files (mainly cars) to .3ds format as a single object. (At the moment I must use Zmodeler 1.07b for this function).

It would save me lots of time when doing the lower lods!! ;)

@TomMK : Why not grouping all the objects in one then and export this all in one object as a .3ds file ? (sure it would be faster with a one click feature though :))

But for group car parts you need to add one by one to a single object no?
