which new new graphic cards work with gp3 - please contribute

Posted by belini
I thought I'd start this thread to help folks from making
the same mistake as I've made choosing a new graphic card for
gp3/gp32k

I've upgrade my pc as a birthday present.......
happy birthday to me:)
a nice intel duel core E8400 and nvidia gforce 9600GT, misery,
If only I'd read masterboy's thread concering a similar
problem with nvidia cards. it's slooowww, very very slow 160%
PO, gp4 is amazing, 60fps with full detail max 40% PO, which
is the same I was getting with my old agp 6600GT.

so I thought it would be helpful if folks could list cards
that they've bought in the past year that don't cause the
same problem, it would also help me find something to replace
the 9600GT

so to kick this off don't buy nvidia 8600GT or PCIEx16 9600GT

thanks

Happy birthday, Paul!!!

Happy birthday, Paul !

Happy racing from Germany !!!

well I'm one step nearer the solution, from what I can gather nvidia cards
with direct 10 support will always give a high PO as they no longer support
direct x 7, so that rules out gforce 8 and 9 series, don't know about ATI
cards yet.

pk:(

I mount an ATI Radeon 9600, probably an old series now, but never had problems.
PO seems not a problem...

Yes, I'm using the ATI9600 too. No problems as long as I leave most of the fancy 3D stuff off (factory default). You can still buy them at a very nice price these days.

A newer Radeon-an X1950 here, works fine (tho without AA and AF-haven't tested it with them on yet!)

Happy birthday, Paul !!

My ATI Radeon X1800XL have no support vor directX 10
Now, at present no problem, I'm using Win XP with DirectX 9c

I think at the moment an ATI card its better for GP3

Greeting from Austria
great guys, keep 'em coming:)

did some more tests with the 9600GT around sepang last
night, card works fine as long as there's no other cars.
I was getting a PO with gpxpatch, low of 1% (yes
really) an average of 11% and a max of 17%.

problem is at the race start PO can rise to over 350%,
it's really undrivable in a race as PO is all over the place.
after about half a lap the PO drops rapidly to under 80%,
depending on how many cars are around, problems arise
though as PO can drop from 180% to 10% in a few hundred
metres which really screws braking points, to be honest it's
not much fun.

other side effects though are that I'm getting really bad
audio corruption with 3d sound in gp32k, have to say this
doesn't look good for the future of gp3 as pc's evolve.

can you post if your card is AGP, PCI or PCIE and any
if there's any sound problems with gp32k

thanks
pk

don't bother with AA/AF gp3 doesn't support it.
this looks promising, is it a PRO,XT OR XTX also is the
card AGP,PCI or PCIE?

thanks

an old NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 and i have exactly the same problem... i really don't have problems at the middle of the race, but at the start it's undrivable...

-------------------------------------------
I
Have the NVidia GForce 7600 GT PCI EXPRESS
with the Dual core 5600 from AMD

and still the creative liveplayer 5.1

with the belini tracks i have a PO arround 20 in normal races
and it climbs to 65 when i start in the rain from behind

so i 'm very happy with this
all is in full detail
only thing i had to do is redesign the tyres
because the rotating bridgestonelogo was to low

i agree with paul that future computers gonna be a problem with gp3

thanks for the info this is looking like a sound problem with
directx 10 cards

pk

My on-board sound chip is the standard n-force AC97 type. A bit odd balancing between car and other sounds but okay.

Brian

p.s. also used an ancient hercules sound card for years previously.

Nico bites yer tyres!
it's the Sapphire X1950 Pro--PCI-E. I've not had any sounds problems, (i'll try to find GP3 2K so i can verify this for that one too). I'm also running Vista, and so Directx10, though as far as i understand this card doesn't officially support it. Still, GP3 runs fine, and seems to have stopped having the random CTD bug i had in XP too :)

be interesting to see if you can get gp32k running under
vista, I did try gp32k on vista but it kept crashing
when loading the tracks, could have been the 9600GT
causing the crash.

thanks for the xtra info

if there's anyone out there using a directx 10 enabled ATI Radeon card please
post if it works, otherwise these are the fastest cards that run gp3/2k
with xp2.

GForce 7600 GT - confirmed
ATI Radeon X1950 Pro - confirmed
Gforce 7900gtx - should work
ATI Radeon X1950XT - should work

Nvidia 9600GT works under vista both with gp3 and gp32k, always crashes though
when calibrating hardware graphics, gp3 will work with gpxpatch but gp32k
crashes, both crash when leaving a race back to menu, but strangly I found
a fix for this was to complete a quick race, automatically let gp3 return
to menu, than it worked, PO was higher than xp average of 40% using an E8400.

pk

the graphics caliberation crash happens in Vista with the X1950 Pro too. seem to remember it happening in XP, and someone explained it as it getting confused when the graphics card has two outputs or something... I'll test GP3-2K with Vista tonight to see how i fare...

UPDATE: GP3-2K works fully in Vista on my rig. Needs to be run as an Admin, other than that no probs at all... not tested GPxPatch yet

Sooo.... basically a DX7 layer is needed on top of DX9 / 10 to make it work properly with the newer cards?
