Other Games Mika, make sure you check your Motherboard bios before you go for a Phenom II, remember what happened to me!

Off-Topic *phew*
new processor arrived this morning - so i stripped the pc, installed the new cpu, put the mobo back into the case and linked it all up. it all worked - i installed the new bios which went fine. Then stripped it all back out again, put the Phenom II back in, got it back into the case again, and its booted successfully this time! :D
With any luck, installing the OS, drives and graphics

Off-Topic No! They didn't have an AM2 processor to try out! i found that hard to believe. He wanted me to strip out the motherboard and take it in for them to have a look at it. Sounds like he was maybe trying to convince me to pay for a repair/replacement.
Gonna order the cheapest AM2 model I can find that's on the list for the default BIOS and see how that goes. And if that fails too I know

Off-Topic Sorry to double post - apparently the mobo is compatible with the processor, but only after downloading a bios update. I guess this means I need to get hold of another processor - get the motherboard up and running so I can download a new BIOS then re-install the Phenom II?

Off-Topic Yeah I noticed that the CPUs weren't on the respective websites. But the socket types were the same and I was elsewhere informed that this meant they should work.
Gah I dont know what to do now. The guys at the repair store think there's a fault but they couldn't pin it down to the processor nor the motherboard. I can't really request a refund on both, can I?
I suppose

Off-Topic I guess this is something which is impossible to diagnose online. I'll have a word with my local computer repair store tomorrow and hopefully they'll be able to shed some light on it. I just hope nothing's wrong with the CPU. The heat sink/fan was really horrid to get on, i've got a seriously bad feeling. I didn't hear anything crack or break though, so... hmm, i'll

Off-Topic I *think* so. The connection isn't perfect on the back of the motherboard. But the monitor reacts when I turn on the PC so it must be connected.
I've removed all non-essential parts, like graphics card and optical drive, so I'm basically running off the CPU, mobo and onboard graphics. No BIOS yet... :-\

Off-Topic Hmm that explains only why the HDD light wasn't lighting up on my Case, not the whole non-bios thing.
I went through my manual and these were the thinsg I didn't connect because I didn't know or recognise the cable/port:
- Clear RTC RAM jumper
- USB device wake-up jumper
- keyboard power jumper
- Floppy disc connector
- chassis intrusion connector
- IDE connectors (I don

Off-Topic Well... I've connected the speaker to the speaker slot on the motherboard. No beeps what-so-ever.
My HDD has no power cable - would that prevent anything happening at start up? I'm a bit confused as to why there's no power cable for it....

Off-Topic Well, my first boot was a fail. All the fans powered up, and the LED on the motherboard/graphics card lit up (presumably the ones that are indicating power) but no sign of any BIOS. Grrr... i'm not sure if it's a hardware problem, a connection problem or what right now....

Off-Topic Okay well everything's ordered now. Thanks for the advice over the last few days! No doubt i'll be back here when something doesn't fit haha.

Off-Topic Yeah that's what I heard. No point in investing heavy amounts into undeveloped technology. I have in fact changed the Mobo I was going to get to a standad Asus M3A78. I noticed the one I had already was a Micro ATX. I figure for £2 the couple of extra expansion slots was worth it :P
by
Hologide
-
Off-Topic Yeah I noticed that too! I just saw a few others which had more slots and had Crossfire and stuff like that. Wasn't sure if it was worth the extra money for some future expansion. I guess one HD4850 should be enough for now!
Now for the hard part, parting with the cash...

Off-Topic Right, I'm ready to order now. I've got it down to £700 inc. monitor
the only component I'm slightly concerned about is the Motherboard:
I guess my only source of concern is that it cant be upgraded easily and I'm planning on using this system for at least 3/4 years. The motherboard should serve my Phenom 920 fine over that period, right??
Yeah I did a few googles an

Off-Topic Sorry to continually pick your guy's brains - I just want to be 100% sure what I'm getting will work. Will a 460W PSU power a Phenom II and HD4850?
Saw this on eBuyer, looks pretty good value:

Off-Topic Its cool!
On a quick side note - I dont need to much kit to put it together do i? Just a few hours, a decent screwdriver and a means of grounding myself?

Off-Topic Erm... it's 2 x 2GB. Unless you mean a single 4GB option?
I read an online review on the Silverstone PSU. Pretty positive in terms of performance. I've heard some horror stories about PSUs blowing up and the like so I'm slightly paranoid about going budget on that one.
Those screenshots were pretty nice!

Okay, this is where I'm at now. To be honest, I'm at the point where I feel ready to order. I'll probably do it tomorrow sometime, I should have free postage on Scan by then. I'm going to source out a monitor from elsewhere, possibly second hand, or else the cost might start getting out of hand. Can always make a new monitor a bday present or something like that
So my

Off-Topic So the common concensus is that if I were to say, invest £200 in a CPU and mobo - I'm best of putting the chunk of that into my CPU?
I'm sure I'll use quad core. I'll be running simulations and precidtive models over the next few years so I'm sure multiple cores will be of benefit to me
looking online the Phenom II seems to be starting at approx. £150? That's

Thanks for the serious on topic replies guys, all useful to me
I've been thinking a little bit, and i am largely flexible. I could basically spend up to £1000 on this machine, but as a student I was hoping to keep some of that in reserve as a "nights out" fund :D

Off-Topic Thanks guys. Gaz - my budget is highly flexible. Up to £1000, but as a student I was hoping to keep hold of some of that to help pay off future rents. Trying to avoid part time work over the course of my degree!
One question - how would I go about installing Windows 7 on a computer with no operating system on it???

Off-Topic So as another laptop bites the dust I've deemed it time to upgrade.
I'm gonna build my own computer with a budget of £500, flexible. Posting on these forums because one of my ambitions is to run GP4 hi-res, something I've never had the pleasure of doing before
Here it is, all prices taken off Scan.co.uk

F1 Yeah.... if there isn't a decent battle for the lead in the next few races I might stop bothering with F1 tbh. It's been like this since about 2001 (bar '05?) and it's just getting a bit boring now
So I couldn't give a toss who wins, I just want to see racing
Having said that, Nico is looking quick :D
