thought i'd bring it up in this fancy new forum.
those of you who owned a SNES will back me up. super mario kart/world, starfox, ISS (original) way better than pro evo 4, donkey kong, the list goes on, and they all had great memorable music. gameplay ruled over graphics, and to be honest games aren't as fun anymore.
those who disagree with the ISS statement, try to remember the game, the cool scenario's, 2-0 down to japan, 5 mintutes to win it, the sound of the brazilian fans, just awesome, and the total fear you had when Redondo got the ball, or the dutch shooting from the halfway line. CLASSIC.
mario kart unsurpassed in gameplay andf un, the split screen madness, the green shells, the red shells, the banana skins. name me a better a game, i dare you.
GP4 doesn't count:)
90's ruled!

Indycar 1 was the defining sim for me - GP1 got put to the side for that - GP2 got heroic status when I played the demo for that though - 1st game I've bought on the day of release, and I didn't even have a PC.

Completley agree, there was a nice balance of good graphics (for the time) and still enjoyable gameplay.
Whereas nowerdays it's all graphics and too many controls, the example that comes to mind is the Tom Clancy games, all of which take a long time to learn and master.
I wouldn't say I feel out of my depth with modern games, they just don't have that "pick up and play" quality that games of the 90s had.

Manic Mansion on NES was one of best games ive ever played. Also the old Mario and Sonic games still beat the new 3d ones.

the games were more editable, when i got involved in the online Gp2 comunity in around 96, anyone could do anything (as long as you could use simple dos commands to run a few programs) now, the only people who can edit it, and produce anything of quality are those with a degree in photoshop, or those who spend months making an ultra high poly 3d model.

New Zealand Story. I rest my case :p

I think our expectations were lower then, but also, the emphasis was on gameplay, not realism flat out. The quality of a game shone through, even with bad graphics - it was almost a more human sort of affair, you could sense the programmers / designers put a lot into it :)

Why say "those were the days!". We still have a working spectrum, NES, Atari etc! Why not find yours (or get one for cheap like) and then carry on playing! Its even better than emulators because it comes complete with loading times of 3 hours and the slightest knock meaning the game is reset :D

Who said ISS was better?! ISS is Pro Evo arcade version isnt it? PE4 is the most perfect footy game known to man.

I would say generally games made in the 90s were better, because they were that - games. Now, they are more of a mass enterainment, and so they are made to appeal to a wide audience, rather than entertain (and therefore make them buy) the small gaming population.

The other side of the argument though is that a game done well now is more fun than a game from the 90s. Take Papy games, just as an example. Indycar 1 was great fun when it was released. Truly fantastic game, but NASCAR 2003 is more fun, because it has better graphics, sounds, physics and the lot to make an experience, which make for a better experience of what it is trying to do - simulate as realistically as possible driving a racing car.

NES was slightly too early for me, the SNES was my first gaming system. I fell in love with Legend of Zelda - A Link To The Past, and that hasn't wavered since. I downloaded it as soon as I discovered emualtors.

However, Final Fantasy IV was a great game an' all but... I prefer the modern Final Fantasy VII and FFX if I'm honest.

But Ralv, you win ;) Legend of Zelda is still my favourite.

Have the SNES Zelda on Gameboy Advance now, just as playable now as it was over 10 years ago.

I agree with the physics and sound but i always thought the graphics could've been done better

with the support from the racing sim community i'm sure it will get the updates its deserves to move it forward like the GTP mod and GPL mods/track graphics.
