The English team just visited an orphanage in Soweto. "It's hard to look into these sad faces, bereft of all hope," says Jamal (6).

LOL, that is pretty funny. :)

As it happens, in addition to me not being an England fan at the best of times, my new girlfriend/love interest is German. So you guys can count on me being an ally :P

To quote the barmy army last time i was at an Ashes match (repeated ad nauseum)....

"If it wasn't for the English you'd be Krauts"

Go England

What are the ENglish but Krauts? Ango-Saxons were Germanic tribes. And even the royal Family has a German name.

Really really hope England win tomorrow, if only to shut up loudmouth Beckenbauer.

I picked Germany to go through, the only difficulty was picking the proper score...

Compared to the "German Panzer Shot England Kaput" rhetorics always coming from across the Channel this is harmless.

My money is on a win for Germany, despite being English - it's just the most likely outcome tbh. My wife is half-German (and i'm 1/8!), so i can technically transfer my support at any time ;)

BTW, can someone tell The Sun, Mirror et al that the war references got old about 60 years ago? I read an article about the match on Bild's website, and it read much more like our tabloids do when England play Scotland. 'Nuff said.

Didn't he turn out to be pretty much right in the end? ;)

I thought it was a pretty entertaining game. Shame about the glaring miss by the referee and linesmen, but the better team won.

Actually Poland, Ghana and Turkey won, England lost and Germany just watched.
