The Soldier by Rupert Brooke

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam;
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.
And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

I just read this to my mate, we're having a few quiet ales, and he started snoring after the sixth line. He is an Aussie with an Irish last name and has an intense dislike for Sassenachs! Excluding myself of course. :-)

St Georges day, ahhh, reminds me of the good old days in cubs and scouts when I use to do the Sunday Parades and marching. Seems overlooked these days, what a shame! :(

You Englishers need to loosen up and enjoy St George's Day like us Irish folk enjoy St Patrick's Day.

I think Paddy's day is bigger in England than St Georges day., Irony!

Maybe we need to commercialise St Georges day to be more how the Irish celebrate Paddy's day.

Then again, if Paddy's day stereotypes the laid back jolly Irish lifestyle, then maybe the way the English sit on their a$$es and command it be just another excuse for a day off, then maybe it is correct the way it is.

Shame that! I have never once heard someone say HEY ITS ST GEORGES DAY LETS HIT THE PUB FOR A PINT AND SOME FISH N CHIPS.

Ah well. Life goes on!

I spent English National day eating Italian food and watching the Irish sensation, Riverdance.

My conclusion? Foreign culture rocks, England sucks.

a bunch of wealthy businessmen in England are campaigning to get it made into an official bank holiday, including my ex-boss at a company based in Lytham, Lancashire. last year when i worked for him, there were celebrations/events for 3 days around St Georges day. on the Thursday (actual St Georges Day) all his staff had the day off, and he organised a parade along Lytham seafront, with some keynote speakers such as ex-rugby bloke Bill Beaumont, and MP Martin Bell. then on the friday, they had a blacktie dinner to celebrate it, and then on the saturday there was a family fun day on Lytham green (field area near the windmill on the seafront). he's done this type of thing for the past 2 or 3 years.

you can see a clip of him on the Northwest news from last year: Click

that was my boss, David Haythornthwaite, before i left at the end of June '09.

i did exactly that on Friday morning as i walked into work and met my friends! i said let's all go out and get wasted for St George's Day. then someone said "yeah, it's funny why we celebrate St Patrick's Day more than we do St George's" and i said "yeah, that's why i said it, dumbass!"
